Happened to be at a kids party at Madills Farm Playground back in May.
While in the area I looked on phone c:geo map to see if there were any green spaces nearby with no geocaches and there were quite a few !
I decided this Park would be most suitable as it has a very controversial History..and it's future is unclear
. You can Google heaps of info about it ......
It is a valley of over 22 thousand square metres that has never been cleared ....home to tui , piwakawaka , ruru , kereu, and kaka ....and in the stream are banded kokopu, red finned bullies and eels It channels water into a stream that discharges into Kohimarama Beach..
The wetland area below the canopy filters impurities from the surrounding urban environment , and by absorbing or slowing run off , reduces downstream flooding risks and improves the purity of water flowing into the ocean.
A remnant forest that has become disconnectedf from its cultural history and wider ecological landscape ....Some mature trees here are over 200 years old.
Two years ago a visiting Ecologist called it a "Strangled Jewell'
After years of neglect, the community has been helping the Forest and Wetland area to return to it's former glory .
Eastern Bays Songbird Project has been co ordinating volunteers and receiving funds to help with this .
A few years ago it was all over the news as the owners,,,, the Melanesian Mission, were planning to sell it for housing !!!!!
I have not been able to get a recent update on the situation .
Anyway,,,The cache is poked into an existing hole at the base of a many-trunked tree ....
The access to the forest is from the end of Pamela Place ...a dead end street .
The small cache container is inside a delicate unusual horn shape of natural camo I found somewhere ,,,,so please be very gentle .,,,,as I don't have another one !
