Stanisław Wawrzyniec Staszic – A Remarkable Citizen of Piła

---- English version below ----

Stanisław Wawrzyniec Staszic, ur. przed 6 listopada 1755 w Pile (6 listopada to data chrztu), zm. 20 stycznia 1826 w Warszawie.

Działacz oświeceniowy, pionier spółdzielczości, pisarz polityczny i publicysta, filozof i tłumacz, wolnomularz, przyrodnik: geograf i geolog; ksiądz katolicki. Członek Izby Edukacyjnej Księstwa Warszawskiego w 1808 roku, minister stanu Księstwa Warszawskiego od 1809 roku, radca stanu Księstwa Warszawskiego od 1810 roku, zastępca ministra oświaty Królestwa Polskiego w latach 1818–1824, minister stanu Królestwa Polskiego od 1824 roku.

Urodzony w rodzinie mieszczańskiej (ojciec Wawrzyniec i dziadek byli burmistrzami Piły; matką była Katarzyna z Mędlickich, burmistrzanka pilska). Uczęszczał do Kolegium jezuitów w Poznaniu.

Rok później (1782) otrzymał doktorat obojga praw Akademii Zamojskiej i tamtejszą katedrę języka francuskiego (do roku 1784). Jeszcze dwukrotnie (IV 1790 – XII 1791 i XII 1794 – VI 1797) wyjeżdżał za granicę. W pierwszym przypadku wyjechał z Zamoyskimi do Wiednia, a następnie do Włoch (do Zamościa powrócił w grudniu 1791).

Pełnił funkcje państwowe i społeczne. W 1812 roku przystąpił do Konfederacji Generalnej Królestwa Polskiego.

W 1825 opublikował informacje o Górach Izerskich i Karkonoszach. W latach 1816–1824 pełnił funkcję dyrektora generalnego Wydziału Przemysłu i Kunsztów Królestwa Kongresowego.

The bench was created by dr. Norbert Sarnecki, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts, now the University of Arts in Poznań, Faculty of Painting, Graphic Arts and Sculpture. The bench was unveiled on Monday, October 9, 2017.

Stanisław Staszic is depicted here as a thoughtful man, reviewing the first edition of his work: "Warnings for Poland." ("Przestrogi dla Polski")

Biography

Stanisław Wawrzyniec Staszic, born before November 6, 1755, in Piła (November 6 is the date of his baptism), died January 20, 1826, in Warsaw.

He was an Enlightenment activist, pioneer of cooperatives, political writer and publicist, philosopher and translator, freemason, naturalist: geographer and geologist; Catholic priest. Member of the Educational Chamber of the Duchy of Warsaw in 1808, minister of state of the Duchy of Warsaw from 1809, state counselor of the Duchy of Warsaw from 1810, deputy minister of education of the Kingdom of Poland from 1818 to 1824, minister of state of the Kingdom of Poland from 1824.

Born into a bourgeois family (his father Wawrzyniec and grandfather were mayors of Piła; his mother was Katarzyna from the Mędlicki family, a mayor of Piła). He attended the Jesuit College in Poznań. After finishing school (seminary) in Poznań, he was ordained (1778/1779) and in 1779 became a priest.

He also studied from 1779–1781 in France (Paris: physical and natural sciences at the Collège de France – where he met G.L. Buffon) and Germany (from mid-1779: Leipzig and Göttingen). During this period, he visited the Alps and the Apennines.

Upon returning to Poland (1781), he took up a position as tutor to the sons of former Chancellor Andrzej Zamoyski. A year later (1782), he received a doctorate in law from the Zamość Academy and held a chair of French language (until 1784). He traveled abroad twice more (April 1790 – December 1791 and December 1794 – June 1797). In the first instance, he traveled with the Zamoyski family to Vienna, and then to Italy (returned to Zamość in December 1791). In the second, he again visited Vienna with the Zamoyski family. According to the parish chronicles of St. Catherine's Church in Czernięcin, he was a pastor in Turobin and rector in Czernięcin from 1788–1791.

In 1801, he bought houses to serve as the headquarters of the Society of Friends of Science (appointed as a member of the TPN a few months earlier, in 1800). In the autumn of 1804, he traveled abroad again, visiting: Wrocław, Dresden, and Paris (returned to Poland in June 1805). Two months later, he embarked on a geological expedition to the Tatra Mountains, during which he climbed Krywań and Lomnica (August 21, 1805 – first ascent to the peak). He held various state and social functions. In 1812, he joined the General Confederation of the Kingdom of Poland.

Staszic was one of the leading reformers and scholars of the Polish Enlightenment. A philosopher advocating a monistic concept of world development. He worked to improve the situation of peasants.

In 1812, at the Jarosławiec estate (near Uchań), he founded the Hrubieszów Agricultural Society, thus becoming a precursor of cooperatives in Poland (in 1816, the Dziekanowski estate joined the movement, and in 1817, the Hrubieszów estate – townspeople with their own estates did not agree to include the town in the Society).

He played an important role in the development of industry, acting as a geologist and nature researcher. In 1825, he published information about the Jizera and Karkonosze Mountains. From 1816–1824, he was the general director of the Department of Industry and Crafts of the Congress Kingdom. During this time, he prepared a plan for the expansion of the Old Polish Industrial District. He resumed the exploitation of coal from the Reden deposit in present-day Dąbrowa Górnicza. Thanks to Staszic's initiative, many industrial facilities were established, including the first zinc smelters in the Kingdom of Poland (four smelters collectively named "Konstanty" – 1816–1822) and iron foundries.

He was a patron and promoter of the inventor Abraham Stern.

He was buried at the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (former Camaldolese) in Warsaw's Bielany. The priest's funeral was attended by 14,000 people. According to his will, part of his estate – 800,000 zł – was divided into four parts of 200,000 zł each, between the founding funds of a workhouse for the poor, the Hospital of the Infant Jesus, a monument to Nicolaus Copernicus, the Institute for the Deaf, and the Marcinean Hospital. For nearly four years after Staszic's death, his grave was a meeting place for Warsaw's youth and members of patriotic movements. In the 20th century, his neglected grave was renovated thanks to the efforts of the rector of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, Prof. Ryszard Tadeusiewicz, and the AGH Alumni Association. The renovated tombstone was unveiled on December 1, 1999.

On July 31, 1818, he was awarded the Order of the White Eagle. In the Congress Kingdom, he was also a knight of the 1st class Order of Saint Stanislaus.
