Geocache Description:

EarthCache: The Colors of Petra

English

Petra (ancient Greek Πέτρα [ˈpɛtʁa] "rock, rock massif", Arabic البتراء al-Batrā', Nabataean probably Reqmu "the red one"), a ruined site in present-day Jordan, was the capital of the Nabataean Empire in ancient times. It is considered a unique cultural monument due to its monumental burial temples, whose facades were carved directly out of the rock. On December 6, 1985, Petra was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

In Petra, you should take time to admire the multicolored and rhythmic patterns of the Umm Ishrin sandstone layers formed 540 million years ago. The bright shades originate from various iron and manganese oxides that come together with hydroxides in the sandstone.

The Jordanian architect and artist Ammar Khammash wrote: "Petra is a wonderful place where geology and archaeology coexist in a beautiful way. To better understand the monuments of Petra, one should pay some attention to the geology of the site and make an effort to understand the properties of the stones that were available to the Nabataean stonemasons at the site.

It can be assumed that the sandstone layers in Petra are the decisive factor for the choice of this location, the size of the monuments, the fine architectural details and the good degree of preservation that the city of Petra has retained to this day.

It might be more appropriate to think of Petra not as a collection of monuments with geological features in between, but rather as a place with special geological features whose splendor is enhanced by the monuments.

The geological history of Jordan dates back more than 600 million years to the Precambrian, when the continental base plate of the Arabian Peninsula was formed. For over 550 million years, numerous deep-sea and shallow shelf transitions determined the geological development of Jordan and deposited huge sediments of clay, sandstone, siltstone, limestone and fossils. In contrast, large parts of the marine sediments were once again eroded away by the erosive effects of water and wind during the geological eras. Today, 120-520 million year old marine and terrestrial sandstone sediments cover the Petra and Wadi Rum region, forming an impressive landscape of reddish-brown rock towers up to 1700 meters high, perched on the ancient Precambrian (Arabian) basement and surrounded by sandy valleys (southern basement complex and Paleozoic sandstone area). The last and protracted transgressions took place during the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods, leaving their sediments covering about 70% of Jordan as a flat limestone plateau (central and northeast Jordanian limestone area). In the middle Tertiary (Miocene, 25-20 million years ago), the entire region became part of the important East African Rift System after the separation of the Palestine region from the African continent. The process included the opening of the Red Sea between the African and Arabian plates, the Gulf of Aqaba and the Wadi Araba-Dead Sea-Jordan Rift Valley. The Dead Sea itself, a last remnant of the former great Quaternary Lake Lisan, is the deepest point on earth and has the highest salinity of any aquatic system in the world. The continental plate movements led to widespread magmatic activity with extensive volcanic fields and basalt outflows in the north-eastern desert region of Jordan (basalt plateau), which also cover large areas of the Hauran in south-eastern Syria. The extensive and saline depression of the Al Azraq oasis with its rich groundwater resources and the salt pan of Al Jafr were covered by large lakes during the humid Pleistocene. In the past, copper from the mines in the Wadi Araba formed the basis for the wealth of the Nabataean kings, but today mining is unprofitable. Jordan's current wealth is based on immense phosphate deposits that were once deposited as organic sediments on the seabed in the late Cretaceous period. An inexhaustible resource is the salt of the Dead Sea, which is used for industrial, medical and cosmetic purposes.

But how do the bright colors in the rock of Petra come about?

The type of rock found in Petra is sandstone. Sandstone is a sedimentary rock that has formed from sand that has been compacted and held together over time. Sandstone consists of sand-sized mineral or rock particles that are held together by a natural cement such as silica or calcite.

The sandstone in Petra consists of a variety of different rock formations, including the Mujib Sandstone, the Qusayr-'Amra Sandstone and the Umm Ishrin Sandstone. These rock formations were formed from sand that was deposited in the region millions of years ago and have been subjected to various geological processes over time, such as erosion, weathering and tectonic activity, which have shaped and altered the rock.

Sandstone is a relatively hard and durable rock that is often used as a building material.

The Umm Ishrin Formation consists of medium to coarse-grained, well to moderately sorted, poorly cemented quartz arenites with minor amounts of siltstone and mudstone [17,18]. The color is generally reddish-brown with shades of red, orange, yellow and white, which is due to the presence of iron oxides, mainly limonite.

The color variation of sandstone is truly fascinating. It ranges from white, yellow, red, brown to gray and even black. The specific colors of a sandstone are mainly determined by the minerals that form it.

White
Mainly due to the quartz content. Quartz is often seen as a colorless crystal, but can also appear white.
Red and yellow

Caused by iron oxides, e.g. hematite, goethite, which are also known as rust. Limonite often gives sandstone a yellowish hue.

Brown and black

Iron oxides and carbon can also cause brown and black shades, especially if they are present in large quantities. The more carbon, the darker the sandstone.
