Geocache Description:

Contexte

Context
The Larzac karst plateau: a whim of nature sculpted by water. It sinks to emerge limpid and virgin further down in the valleys. It (and the carbon dioxide it contains causes a chemical reaction) dissolves limescale. It takes advantage of the weaknesses of the rock, seeps into the cracks, widening its passage over time. It is also during this journey that it is loaded with calcium bicarbonate which, drop by drop, forms stalactites and stalagmites.

Instabilities
The triggering of instability in a rock wall is a complex and multifactorial phenomenon. It depends on the characteristics of the site and factors acting on different time scales.

On the site
Risks of rock collapse: scientific and technical methods of observation, measurement and monitoring are put in place by Géosciences Montpellier le Cerama and Terinov source below:
"As here at the coordinates, a rock column (Bathonian dolomite) is separated from the massif by a crack of around fifty centimeters and rests on marly limestone (Bajocian summit), whose preferential erosion has formed a shelter -rock more than 2 m deep.

Monitoring the movements of this rock column first required the construction of a very high resolution 3D digital model of the object, by combining photogrammetry and survey scanning.
On the other hand, extensometers and clinometers,

arranged in the open slot, continuously measured the variations in spacing and tilting. Monitoring shows sub-millimeter daily and annual opening/closing cycles. These correlate very well with temperature variations. "

Questions :

1) Color and type of rock of this column?
2) What type of rock does this column rest on? His color ?
3) Name 2 factors of instability involved here?
4) What factor plays on the daily and annual sub-millimeter opening/closing cycles of the slot?
5) As a bonus, enjoy the view to the East and attach a photo of the Esclops rock to your log

Take your binoculars, you may be able to see an eagle owl or a peregrine falcon resting there. Or a griffon vulture or a golden eagle flying over it. Or a red-billed grave that nests there.

Happy exploring and contemplating.
