Geocache Description:

The Locuon quarry has long been known, and the Notre-Dame-de-la-Fosse chapel has been located on one of its sides since the 17th century. But it wasn't until Marcel Tuarze, an archaeologist, that the first hypothesis of ancient quarrying was put forward.

This earthcache invites you to discover the quarry's unique granite and the quarry face specific to this site, which is unique in Brittany.

Pour la construction de Vorgium - Carhaix / For the construction of Vorgium - Carhaix

The specific color of Locuon granite, pale and white, and its fine-grained composition are reminiscent of the stones used at Vorgium. Studies have shown them to be identical. The similarity of tool marks on the stone between the two sites lends credence to the hypothesis that the Ploërdut quarry is the place of origin of this material.

The short distance of 27 km, the small difference in altitude, the time and money saved in cutting this granite... all the elements are in favor of concluding that the Locuon quarry was exploited in Roman times, during the construction of the capital Osisme.

Une carrière originale et unique / An original and unique career

Although several extraction sites dating back to Roman times are known in Brittany, the Locuon quarry is the only one today to feature an original quarry face, enabling us to understand the mining technique. The quarry lies on a hillside. The quarrying technique found here is widespread throughout the Roman world, but is only known in Brittany on the northern and eastern working faces.

Initially, vertical trenches were dug around the blocks to be extracted, the dimensions of which depended on demand. The relatively low hardness of this granite allowed for the use of an escoude: a pyramid-ended iron point. The tool marks, blunted by natural erosion, are long, parallel, slightly curved grooves. The block is then loosened with wedges driven horizontally.

At least some of the pruning was done in situ, as evidenced by the column elements left in the quarry. Working in situ had two advantages:

  • freshly quarried granite is easier to cut when it still has its “quarry water”; it hardens as it loses it over the following months,
  • a smaller volume facilitated transport

The Romans were looking for fine-grained, light-colored granites that were relatively soft to extract. Throughput was also an important criterion: the network of vertical and horizontal diaclases facilitates quarrying and enables large blocks to be cut (from 1.60 to 2.10 meters long and 0.65 to 0.85 or even 1.20 meters wide).

The quarry is open in the Rostrenen granite (see geological map above), but has a distinctive feature compared with neighboring rocks: it has a fine-grained arena and contains only muscovite, a mainly white mineral of the silicate group. Adjacent areas consist of coarse-grained granite arena with 2 micas, either homogenous or mixed.

Pour valider votre découverte / To validate your discovery

Question 1 : Rendez-vous aux coordonnées de cette earthcache.

Question 1: Go to the coordinates of this earthcache. You're standing in front of one of the quarry faces where the statue now stands. Look at the stones on the ground in front of the former quarry area. From the information available in the description of this earthcache, can you tell what type of granite they are? Give a typical example to support this statement.

Question 2 : Rendez-vous au Waypoint 2 (N 48° 09.061′ W 3° 18.188′).

Question 2: Go to Waypoint 2 (N 48° 09.061′ W 3° 18.188′). You're standing in front of a wall where the rock has been cut. Observe the 2 main diaclases and give their orientations.

Obligatory souvenir photo - Please post in your log a photo of yourself or one of your favorite geocaching objects (or even just your username written on a sheet of paper or your hand) with the chapel or fountain in the background.
