Geocache Description:

St Pauls - West Pelton

West Pelton emerged as a mining settlement later than Pelton Fell and the Ordnance Survey map of the 1850s shows a crossroads and lanes without a single building.  There was no West Pelton village then, just fields, but the next Ordnance Survey map in the 1890s shows a village clustered around the crossroads along with a chapel, two schools, a pub called the Colliery Inn and a quarry.

On the western side of the crossroads, a vicarage and church dedicated to St Paul was constructed. The church was built in 1879 by Austin, Johnson and Hicks of Newcastle and was paid for by John and Edward Joicey. It was built for the West Pelton parish, created in 1876 from a division of parishes at Tanfield and Pelton. The church is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.

Twelve war dead from the First and Second World Wars are buried in the cemetery.
