Geocache Description:

Lannénec means Ninnoc's pond, and legend has it that Sainte Ninnoc landed in this pond to build the first female monastery in Armorique, and perhaps even Gaul, on its banks. Archaeologists, finding no trace of the monastery, sought out a geologist to see if the ruins had not been swallowed up by the pond, and at the same time to check whether it would have been possible in Ninnoc's time to pass by boat... The mystery remains!

La géologie du secteur / Geology of the area

The Etang de Lannénec to the north of Fort-Bloqué occupies a depression that has communicated with the sea several times, but for the last 1,500 years has remained closed by the dune belt. The sediments at the bottom of this coastal marsh correspond to a succession of marine and lacustrine formations that have accumulated over the last 5,600 years; however, their thickness does not exceed 5.5 m.

The watershed of this pond is mainly composed of coarse-grained leucogranite known as “Ploemeur”, but the northern part is in schist in faulted contact with granite. There are also quartz veins and kaolin deposits.

As can be seen on the geological map, the Lannénec pond area is at the crossroads of 2 faults, the black lines, which cross this area from north-east to south-west, but also on the lower part in a north-west/south-east direction. It is in this second fault that we can see the quartz veins, which are hydrothermal veins. At depth, very hot, pressurized water is loaded with dissolved silica and infiltrates faults and fissures in the surrounding rock (in this case, Plomeur granite). Under the effect of cooling and reduced pressure, the previously dissolved silica crystallized and deposited on the fault walls, eventually filling them completely.

Pour valider votre découverte / To validate your discovery

Go to the coordinates of this earthcache to make your observations. Your observations will focus on the quartz boulders in the area of this earthcache.

Question - At the coordinates of this earthcache, look at the quartz boulders at the side of the road. What is the shape and orientation (horizontal or vertical) of the rocks that form these blocks?

Obligatory souvenir photo - Please post in your log a photo of yourself or one of your favorite geocaching objects (or even just your username written on a sheet of paper or your hand) near one of the quartz blocks in the background.

Log in this "Found it" cache with your photo in your log and send me your answers either via my profile or via the geocaching.com (Message Center) mail, and I will contact you in case of a problem.

To remind: there is no box to find to validate an earthcache! You can log your discovery but also send me your answers as soon as possible.
