Josef Lada (17.12.1887, Hrusice - 14.12.1957, Prague) was a prominent Czech painter, illustrator, caricaturist, set designer, and writer. As a six-month-old child, he fell onto a cobbler's knife and injured his eye, which influenced his distinctive drawing style characterized by flat shapes, strong outlines, and simple lines.
Even as a schoolboy, he would draw domestic animals and create simple sketches to entertain his classmates. In 1901, he moved to Prague to apprentice with a bookbinder. Early on, he earned a living by creating humorous illustrations and caricatures for newspapers. In 1906, he was accepted into the Arts and Crafts School on his second attempt.
In the 1920s, he illustrated the book "The Good Soldier Svejk".
By the end of the decade, Lada began publishing his own children's books, which he both wrote and illustrated. His fairy tale books "The Clever Godmother Fox" and "Mikes, the Cat" are accompanied by charming illustrations.
He drew inspiration from the surroundings of the village of Hrusice, where he spent much of his life. The picturesque village, with its small church on a hill, became the foundation for his iconic motifs.

Josef Lada's illustrations have become an integral part of Czech culture, shaping the imagination of generations. His distinctive style, filled with warmth and nostalgia, has accompanied countless children through their first books and continues to evoke a sense of tradition and national identity.
