Geocache Description:

Hang Múa là điểm tham quan nổi tiếng ở Ninh Bình. Tuy nhiên, điểm tham quan chính thực sự là leo lên Núi Ngọa Long.

The Mua Cave is a popular attraction in Ninh Binh. The real main attraction, however, is the ascent to Ngoa Long Mountain. The summit is reached via 500 stone steps. From up there you have an incredible view of the karst landscape with the cone-shaped mountains, rice fields and the Lotus Lake.

Origin of the Dragon Mountain

Ngoa Long is an impressive karst mountain that rises from the surrounding plain. Its conical shape is the result of thousands of years of weathering and erosion of the limestone.

The landscape around Ninh Binh has characteristic karst tower shapes. These can rise up to several hundred metres above the local karst plain, which extends as a base at a low height above the karst water level. It took around a million years for the karst towers to develop into their present form. In principle, there is no clear distinction between cone karst and tower karst. The cones normally have a wider base in relation to their height and therefore less steep slopes than the towers. However, all transitions between these two forms occur.

The karst mountains in this region were formed by the dissolution of limestone by carbonated water. This process, also known as karst erosion, leads to the formation of the characteristic surface shapes. Firstly, rainwater enriched with carbon dioxide from the atmosphere dissolves the limestone on the surface. Along cracks and fissures, the water penetrates deeper and widens them. Over time, softer layers of rock are eroded more quickly, while harder areas are left standing. This leads to the formation of the striking cone-shaped mountains that we see today.

Formation of karrenfields

A geological phenomenon can be observed on the summit of Ngoa Long - the formation of karrenfields.

A karren is a small morphological form created by solution weathering in karst. Carls are understood to be paths of water from the surface into the interior of the karst that have been widened in the fracture network as a result of rock dissolution. The formation of karsts also takes place below the surface of the rock in a regular manner, in strict dependence on the fracture network, as well as in caves.

These grooves and furrows in the limestone are caused by various aspects:

  •     direct impact of rainwater on the rock surface
  •     Different dissolution rates of the limestone due to variations in the rock structure
  •     Run-off water that runs along existing weak points in the rock

Karren are categorised according to their shape:

Flat karren/ clints - characterised by their flat surface parallel to the bedding.

Fissure karren/ grikes - as the name suggests, they are bound to fissures, cracks, fractures or other vertical surfaces of the karst rock.

Pointed karren/ pinnacles - form pointed, projectile-like pyramids in the karst. The structures do not usually occur in isolated areas, but form clusters.

Take a close look at the rock on site and then please answer the following questions before logging. You are welcome to write the answers and logs in your native language. If you are visiting the earth cache as a team, it is sufficient for one person to send the answers for everyone. Just please write who sent the answers and take an individual photo of yourselves!

1. Would you describe the shape of the karst mountains in the area as a cone or a tower, or do they come in both shapes?

2. Measure or estimate the depth of a well-defined groove on the summit.

3. Which of the shapes described would you categorise the karren as?

4. Take a spoiler-free photo of yourself or a personal item with the dragon or pagoda and attach it to your log!

Send me an email with your answers! After sending the answers you can log right away. If something is wrong, I will contact you. You don't need to wait for the log release! Have fun on this geological journey of discovery!
