Campbelltown railway station is a heritage-listed railway station located on the Main Southern line, at Campbelltown. The station officially opened on 4 May 1858 and the first train service commenced on the 17 May 1958.
Between 1882 and 1963 it was the junction station for the Campbelltown – Camden line.
The Campbelltown to Camden train ceased operation on January 1st, 1963, primarily due to declining ridership caused by the rise of car usage, the shift of coal loading to Campbelltown, and milk delivery by road, making the line financially unviable; essentially, the increasing popularity of motor vehicles made it more practical for people to drive instead of taking the train.
On 5 May 1968, the Main South Line was electrified from Liverpool. Until Macarthur station was opened in July 1985, Campbelltown station was extremity of Sydney network.
Some interesting facts as at end of 2023 Campbelltown station – 2,945,450 passengers come through Campbelltown each year or 8,072 daily- this takes in Sydney Trains and NSW Translink.
