The six Almshouses were founded by Thomas Mildmay - an influential auditor to the Crown - in 1565, and were rebuilt by William Mildmay in 1758. They are located in Moulsham Street in Chelmsford, and are somewhat unusually, 2 storeys high, and constructed of red brick. They are raised above road level and approached by a ramp.
Each almshouse has one window downstairs, and one upstairs, at the front, plus one blind bricked recess, and each has its own front door. There are three chimney stacks on the rear roof slope. The almshouses are now a Grade II listed building.
