Gustave Eiffel was born on December 15, 1832, in Dijon, France. An engineer by training, he is best known for his achievements in metallic architecture, notably the famous Eiffel Tower in Paris, erected for the 1889 World's Fair.

Coming from a bourgeois family, Eiffel studied at the École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures in Paris, where he graduated in 1855. He began his career working on railway projects, quickly specializing in the construction of metal bridges. In 1866, he founded his own company and made a name for himself with bold structures like the Garabit Viaduct and the Maria Pia Bridge in Porto.
The Eiffel Tower, initially criticized, quickly became a symbol of Paris and France. Besides this iconic tower, Eiffel also contributed to the construction of the Statue of Liberty in New York.

Towards the end of his career, he devoted himself to meteorology and aerodynamics, using the Eiffel Tower as a laboratory for his experiments. Gustave Eiffel passed away on December 27, 1923, in Paris, leaving behind a monumental legacy that continues to inspire engineers and architects around the world.
What's the opening date for the Eiffel Tower? Google is celebrating the opening of the Eiffel Tower to the general public on Tuesday, March 31, 2015, with a Doodle paying tribute to one of the world's most famous monuments. That was 126 years ago!
