Celebrate Mateship on GeoMay8 Day!
May 8th is informally known as Mates Day in Australia, celebrating the spirit of mateship—a cultural value that embodies equality, loyalty, and friendship. This concept dates back to Australia’s early colonial days, when convicts and settlers relied on each other for support in a harsh and unfamiliar land. In Australia, a mate is more than just a friend—it signifies shared experiences, mutual respect, and unwavering support.
For the past four years, Calypso62 has hosted a May 8th event to celebrate one of the best aspects of geocaching—the incredible friendships we form through this great activity.
As we travel in New Zealand to attend the Rotorua event, we are making a stop in New Plymouth on 8 May on our way home to Canberra. I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to connect with our Kiwi mates and celebrate this special day together. In these turbulent times, the strong bond of mateship between Australia and New Zealand is more important than ever.
Join me in celebrating our cross-Tasman camaraderie on GeoMay8 Day!
Whether you come for a drink, a meal, or just a chat, let’s catch up to celebrate the mates we’ve met and the adventures still to come.
Please indicate in your WA log if you are planning to stay for dinner and how many people in your party.
This will help me ensure there are enough seats for everyone when I make the table booking.
Hope to see you there!
