Geocache Description:

For this Earthcache, we'll be exploring Popovo Polje, a vast karst plain in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina that offers a unique feature. You'll be exploring this unique feature in this section.

H U M I

A hum (plural: humi) is an isolated, usually steep-walled rock dome made of karst-prone rock (usually limestone) that protrudes from a flat karst depression – a so-called polje. Unlike tropical karst cones, humi are isolated, singular features. The term originally comes from Jovan Cvijić, who described the hum near this place as a new phenomenon in 1918.

Humi form in the final phase of a karst cycle, when the karstified subsoil has been significantly eroded by dissolution processes (corrosion). As a result of the subsequent sealing of the karst subsoil by alluvial sediments (e.g., alluvial fans), the corrosion partially stops. However, at the edges of the polje, where water accumulates, the corrosion continues and widens the valley.

Areas in the valley floor that were less severely affected by corrosion remain as residual forms. These residual rock domes now protrude from the flat polje surface as humi. They thus represent older and higher-lying relief elements that were spared by uneven karstification. Some humi also contain dried-up cave systems within.

In contrast, mogotes develop under humid tropical climatic conditions through more intense and uniform corrosion of the limestone. Deep hollows form through strong chemical weathering, while intervening rock masses remain standing and are shaped into steep-walled cones by further corrosion. Underground cave formation, cave-in, and subrosion play a major role here – processes that are particularly strong in tropical climates.

After you have sent me your answers to the following questions, you can log immediately. I will get back to you in case something is wrong.

1. Describe the appearance of the Hums on site. Pay particular attention to the characteristics of Hums mentioned in the listing.

2. When observing the Hums, you notice its elongated shape. In what rough azimuth direction (0-360°) does this form?

3. What is the significant difference between mogotes and humi? Why are there no mogotes in the Mediterranean region?

4. Estimate the height of the Hum.

5. Upload a photo of yourself with the Hums town sign and the Hums (as in the listing) in the background, along with your log.

Have fun answering the questions

H U M I

Duboke udubine nastaju kroz snažno hemijsko trošenje, dok međuprostorne stijenske mase ostaju stajati i oblikuju se u strme stožaste konuse daljnjom korozijom.

H U M I
