Fondé autour d’un monastère bénédictin au XIe siècle par saint Geoffroy, Le Chalard devient rapidement un centre religieux et culturel rayonnant. Son église romane, son ancien cimetière monastique aux sarcophages sculptés, et ses maisons en pierre témoignent encore aujourd’hui de cette richesse historique.

Lieu de passage et de commerce, la commune fut également marquée par les guerres de religion et l’exploitation de l’or qui contribua fortement à son développement.

Founded around a Benedictine monastery in the 11th century by Saint Geoffroy, Le Chalard quickly became a vibrant religious and cultural center. Its Romanesque church, its ancient monastic cemetery with its sculpted sarcophagi, and its stone houses still bear witness to this rich history.

A place of transit and trade, the town was also marked by the Wars of Religion and gold mining, which contributed significantly to its development.
