Geocache Description:

The 1:50,000 geological maps of France sometimes include geological itineraries at the end of the document, with points of interest marked and documented. This EarthCache is one of these points of interest, located on map 0348N, explanatory note for the Plouay sheet.

Croisty granite, porphyroid, with biotite and muscovite. Located east of Le Faouët and north of Saint-Caradec-Trégomel, this granite appears as a well-defined, fairly narrow, oblong massif extending for several kilometres in a WSW-ENE direction; This massif continues towards the northeast, beyond the Plouay sheet, onto the neighbouring Rostrenen sheet (Bos et al., 1997). This granite is intrusive in the Brioverian metasedimentary series and its contacts are generally clear, with micaschist enclaves being rare.

Croisty granite has a coarse grain and a porphyroid tendency; the quartz is in translucent grey globular islands measuring several millimetres in a white matrix, mainly feldspar, where frequent automorphic feldspar porphyroblasts (1 x 4 cm) also appear; this granite is also relatively rich in biotite and muscovite. On its northern edge, it is sometimes affected by fairly intense deformation characterised by the association of vertical S and C planes, oriented respectively to N80 and N105, and by subhorizontal stretching lineation; more generally, it shows fluidity, particularly evident in the orientation of the feldspar porphyroblasts.

Croisty granite outcrops at the junction of the Lesqueller farm road and 200 m further east, along the D131 road. it is a fairly light grey rock with a medium-coarse grain, rich in biotite and muscovite flakes, and is characterised by the presence of centimetre- and multi-centimetre-sized automorphic porphyroblasts of feldspar.

Pour valider votre découverte / To validate your discovery

At the coordinates of this EarthCache, you will be able to observe an outcrop of Croisty granite located in a small quarry. To access the observation area, you will need to make your way through brambles, broom and gorse. Please wear appropriate clothing to avoid severe scratches.

Question 1 - At the coordinates, look at the rock beneath your feet. What colour is the rock? Can you see any quartz islands? Is the ground hard or soft beneath your feet?

Question 2 - In front of you, on the face of this former quarry, what is the dominant colour of the rock? What can you see in the middle of this face?

Mandatory souvenir photo - At the coordinates of this EarthCache, don't forget to take a photo of yourself or one of your favourite geocaching items (or even just your username written on a piece of paper or your hand) with the quarry face in the background, without revealing too much of the requested information.

Log in this "Found it" cache with your photo in your log and send me your answers either via my profile or via the geocaching.com (Message Center) mail, and I will contact you in case of a problem.

To remind: there is no box to find to validate an earthcache! You can log your discovery but also send me your answers as soon as possible.
