Geocache Description:

The François Le Bail Reserve is the only geological nature reserve of mineralogical interest in France. Managed by the Bretagne Vivante-SEPNB association, it covers 47 hectares in the northwest and south of the island.
The formation of the island of Groix is quite unique, and its geology is very different from that of the Armorican Plateau. It is a privileged site for research and visits.
The island preserves rocks that testify to the existence of an ancient ocean, present approximately 480 million years ago between Europe and Africa. Then, to its disappearance in a subduction zone, meaning that the oceanic tectonic plate plunged beneath the Armorican continental plate, approximately 360 million years ago.
You could be right here at the bottom of this ocean. We are therefore on one of the only proofs that this ocean really existed, which makes this site at Pointe des Chats, in Groix, so special.
Groix undoubtedly deserves its nickname "garnet island," as this mineral is particularly abundant in the island's rocks.
Garnets are typical metamorphic minerals. They are aluminous silicates with a similar crystal-chemical structure. They crystallize in the cubic system, ideally in the form of a dodecahedron.
At Groix, almandine, spessartite, pyrope, and grossular are found. In reality, the island's garnets are a mixture of these garnet types, except in quartzites where spessartite dominates. Furthermore, within a given garnet, the composition varies from the core to the rim. With a hardness of between 6.5 and 7.5, it resists weathering well, unlike glaucophane, especially since it is stable over a wide range of temperatures (350 to 1000°C) and pressures (4 to 100 kbar).
Garnets exhibit a wide variety of colors, ranging from colorless to very dark red, including orange and green, with all the nuances of these colors. Thus, almandine is most often dark red, spessartite orange, and andradite yellow-green.

How to identify garnet? In the field, with a magnifying glass, identifying garnet poses no problem. The grains are generally one to a few millimeters in diameter, and only exceptionally reach a few centimeters in diameter. Each grain ideally has 12 flat, diamond-shaped faces (a dodecahedron in the language of mineralogists). Weathering highlights the garnet on the surface of rocks, whether in mica schists or blue schists. There is virtually no possibility of confusion.

Questions to validate this earthcache:
Based on your observations and using the description.

Question 0
Attach to your log (NOT to your answers) a photo of you or a part of you with your GPS, your personal GC or any other geocaching object at the posted coordinates (without showing the answers !).
The simple photos of the landscape without a personnal item or screenshot of your position do not validate this log condition.
This task is mandatory and allowed by the guidelines updated in june 2019.

Question 1
What type are Groix garnets ?

Observe the glaucophanite (blue schist) in the purple zone (below the quartz vein)

Question 2
Les grains de grenats sont-ils en relief ? Comment l'expliquez-vous ?
Are garnet grains raised ? How do you explain this ?

Question 3
What is the size of the garnets observed in the purple zone ? Millimeter or centimeter?

Send me your proposals for answers either via my profile or via the geocaching.com messaging (Message Center) THEN log this cache "Found it", I will contact you in case of problem.
Make sure to answer ALL questions ! The main condition to log an Earthcache is to answer the questions asked in the description, any log "Found it" registered without prior submission of your proposals of answers will be deleted. It will be the same for logs saved without the required photo.
