The François Le Bail Reserve is the only geological nature reserve of mineralogical interest in France. Managed by the Bretagne Vivante-SEPNB association, it covers 47 hectares in the northwest and south of the island.
The formation of the island of Groix is quite unique, and its geology is very different from that of the Armorican Plateau. It is a privileged site for research and visits.
The island preserves rocks that testify to the existence of an ancient ocean, present approximately 480 million years ago between Europe and Africa. Then, to its disappearance in a subduction zone, meaning that the oceanic tectonic plate plunged beneath the Armorican continental plate, approximately 360 million years ago.
You could be right here at the bottom of this ocean. We are therefore on one of the only proofs that this ocean really existed, which makes this site at Pointe des Chats, in Groix, so special.
Blueschales
Blueschales or glaucophane schists, also called glaucophanites. These schists result from the transformation of basalts, also occurring at a temperature of 450°C and a pressure of 12 kbar, during the same subduction process. These schists primarily contain glaucophane. Blue in color, glaucophane is a double-chain silicate from the amphibole family; it appears here in the form of large fibers. These schists also contain greenish epidote, called pistachite. The presence of meter-sized glaucophanite "boudinage" intercalated within the mica schists is remarkable.
Greenscales
Greenschales, whose green color is due to the presence of green minerals (chlorite, epidote, actinolite), also originate from metamorphosed basalts, but at lower temperature and pressure conditions: 400°C and 4 kbar. These conditions were obtained at a depth of 12 km instead of 36 km for blueschales.
The presence of green minerals, which are hydrated silicates, suggests that the transformation into greenschists occurred as the rocks rose after being sunk and in the presence of water. In a way, these greenschists are blueschists, hydrated and "retromorphized."
Two types are distinguished in the field: green schists with a "prasinitic" structure with ocellar albite (whitish crystals of 3 to 4 mm), epidote, chlorite and blue-green amphibole; and amphibolites without garnet, with blue-green amphibole, sometimes associated with aluminous actinolite and glaucophane.

Questions to validate this earthcache:
Based on your observations and using the description.
Question 0
Attach to your log (NOT to your answers) a photo of you or a part of you with your GPS, your personal GC or any other geocaching object at the posted coordinates (without showing the answers !).
The simple photos of the landscape without a personnal item or screenshot of your position do not validate this log condition.
This task is mandatory and allowed by the guidelines updated in june 2019.
Question 1
At what depth were the blue and green shales formed respectively ?
Question 2
Observe the rocks in stages 1 and 2. Describe and identify the minerals in each of these rocks ? What stage do you find green schale ? What stage do you find blue schale ?
Question 3
Based on the minerals present in greenschale (albite, garnets, glaucophane, etc.), what type of greenschale is it?
Send me your proposals for answers either via my profile or via the geocaching.com messaging (Message Center) THEN log this cache "Found it", I will contact you in case of problem.
Make sure to answer ALL questions ! The main condition to log an Earthcache is to answer the questions asked in the description, any log "Found it" registered without prior submission of your proposals of answers will be deleted. It will be the same for logs saved without the required photo.
