Geocache Description:

Logging Tasks

Observe the rock surface. What shape features do you notice (rounded edges, holes, undercuts, etc.)?

Which do you think shaped these rocks more — wave action or chemical weathering? Explain your reasoning.

Compare the color and texture in different parts of the rock. Which minerals seem more easily weathered?

Description

The rocks along this coast have been sculpted over time by the combined forces of waves, tides, and weathering.
Because the granitic rock here contains both hard and soft minerals, erosion acts unevenly — producing striking irregular and rounded forms.

Formation Processes

Mechanical Erosion by Waves

Repeated wave impact removes small mineral grains from the rock surface.
Over time, this creates wave notches, arches, and smooth undercut shapes.

Chemical Weathering

Saltwater, moisture, and organic acids alter the minerals chemically.
Feldspar is especially vulnerable — it breaks down into clay minerals, giving the surface a rough texture.

Differential Weathering

Because minerals in granite weather at different rates, uneven surfaces and patterns form, giving rise to the sculptural look typical of coastal granite cliffs.

Geological Context

The coastal rocks of Miyajima are mainly Mesozoic granite, once formed deep underground.
Though strong and compact, exposure to salt spray, wave abrasion, and temperature changes gradually wears them away.

What You Can Learn

At this site, you can see both mechanical erosion and chemical weathering working together.
It’s a natural laboratory showing how Earth’s surface slowly changes and returns to the sea.
