1.Περιγράψτε την πέτρα που περιβάλλει τις φλέβες αμιάντου: Τι χρώμα έχει; Πώς φαίνεται η επιφάνεια – λεία, φολιδωτή ή ινώδης; (Μην την αγγίζετε) Πώς συγκρίνονται οι φλέβες;

2. Εκτιμήστε το κατά προσέγγιση πάχος της φλέβας αμιάντου και περιγράψτε τον προσανατολισμό των ινών. Είναι όλες οι ίνες παράλληλες, εγκάρσια ή τυχαία κατανεμημένες; Η φλέβα μοιάζει με μακρύ σωλήνα ή με επίπεδη επιφάνεια;

Τι είναι ο αμίαντος;

Πώς σχηματίζεται ο αμίαντος στους σερπεντινίτες;

Asbestos in Troodos Mountains - Amazing Geology

Overview

Welcome to the Troodos Mountains in Cyprus, a very special place for geology enthusiasts. Here you'll find greenish-shimmering rocks called serpentinites. These rocks originally come from the upper mantle and were transformed over time by heat and water. This process created fine fibers of a mineral called asbestos (chrysotile). In this EarthCache, you'll learn how these fibrous asbestos veins formed through natural processes within the rock.

Safety Notice

Asbestos fibers can be harmful to your health if inhaled. However, the asbestos fibers you see here are firmly embedded in the rock and pose no danger as long as you do not touch, break, or remove any material from the rock. Please strictly adhere to these rules and only observe the fibers with the naked eye.

Logging Requirements

At the given coordinates, find an asbestos vein in the surrounding rocks and answer the following questions. Submit your answers via the message center or by email.

1. Describe the stone surrounding the asbestos veins: What color is it? What does the surface look like – smooth, scaly, or fibrous? (Do not touch) How do the veins compare?

2. Estimate the approximate thickness of the asbestos vein and describe the orientation of the fibers. Are the fibers all parallel, crosswise, or randomly distributed? Does the vein resemble a long tube or a flat surface?

3. Explain in your own words why water is so important for the formation of these fibrous minerals.

4. Mandatory: Take a photo of yourself or a personal item at the specified coordinates without showing the solutions and add it to your log.

Geological Background – The Troodos Ophiolite

The Troodos Mountains are a unique example of how rock from the ocean floor and the upper mantle reaches the Earth's surface. Such rock formations are called ophiolites. The rocks here are mainly composed of peridotite, dunite, and harzburgite – stony relics from great depths beneath the Earth's surface.

Hot, mineral-rich water seeps into the rock, altering the original minerals and transforming them into a group of hydrous minerals called serpentines. This process is called serpentinization and gives the rock its characteristic greenish color.

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a collective term for naturally occurring, fibrous silicate minerals that have a distinctive crystalline structure and are characterized by their strength, fire resistance, and chemical resistance. The word "asbestos" comes from the ancient Greek "asbestos," meaning "imperishable" or "indestructible"—a reference to the material's high durability. Asbestos occurs naturally worldwide in certain rocks, most commonly in serpentinite and amphibole rocks, such as those found here in the Troodos Mountains of Cyprus.

In the past, asbestos was mined worldwide, both in open-pit and underground mines, as was the case here in the asbestos mine near Amiandos. Extracting the fibrous mineral from the rock requires special processes in which the fibers are separated from the rock matrix and sorted by length. Its fibrous structure made asbestos a valuable raw material for various industrial applications. Asbestos fibers can cause cancer, especially when inhaled, so its mining, trade, and use are completely banned in many countries, including the entire European Union; this is not the case in many other parts of the world.

Main types of asbestos

  • Chrysotile (“white asbestos”, belonging to the serpentine family): The most widely used asbestos worldwide, usually found in fibrous veins within serpentinite.
  • Amphibole asbestos such as amosite (brown asbestos) and crocidolite (blue asbestos): Robust, but even more dangerous when inhaled.

How does asbestos form in serpentinites?

Serpentinite originates from ultramafic rocks (which consist almost entirely of dark minerals rich in iron and magnesium), typically peridotite from the upper mantle. These parent rocks consist primarily of the minerals olivine and pyroxene. The transformation begins when water infiltrates the rock and exposes it to elevated pressure and temperatures of approximately 300 to 500 °C, as occurs during mountain building or on former seabeds (e.g., ophiolite complexes such as those found in the Troodos Mountains).

During serpentinization (the transformation process), hot water circulates through cracks in the serpentinite. The water reacts with olivine and pyroxene, incorporating hydrogen and hydroxide ions into the crystal structure. This process forms new minerals, primarily serpentine minerals such as chrysotile, antigorite, and lizardite. During serpentinization, the rock often becomes more voluminous and forms fine, sometimes fibrous structures. Therefore, fibrous chrysotile veins or net-like patterns are frequently found in serpentinite. These fibers usually align parallel to the cracks and form white, silky veins that you can see on the rock.

Due to repeated movements of tectonic plates, some cracks reopen and are refilled with asbestos fibers. Thus, several generations of asbestos veins can sometimes be found in the same rock.

Geologischer Hintergrund – Das Troodos-Ophiolith

Solche Gesteinspakete nennt man Ophiolithe.

Was ist Asbest
