The Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment is a Canadian Army Primary Reserve Force Infantry Regiment based in Belleville, Otario.
From wiki:
"The regiment is headquartered in Belleville, Ontario, with companies in Peterborough and Cobourg. Currently the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment is part of 33 Canadian Brigade Group, one of four Brigade Groups of 4th Canadian Division. The Regimental Headquarters and one company (A Coy/Assoro Coy) are located at 187 Pinnacle Street in Belleville, with additional companies in Peterborough and Cobourg. The Peterborough Armoury houses what was traditionally "B Company" or "Moro Company", and "C Company" or "Cassino Company" is housed in an industrial mall unit on Wilmott Street in Cobourg. Normally the Regiment deploys as a composite, Ortona Company, while the HQ/Admin forms Somme Company."
The Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment, affectionately known as the Hasty P's, traces its beginnings to 1860 when a local militia unit was raised in Belleville. This unit was officially known as the 15th Battalion Volunteer Infantry (Canada). Its members were first called up to active service during the Fenian Raids of 1866, and again during the Northwest Rebellion of 1885, when the Regiment provided a Company to the Midland Battalion.
During the First World War, the Regiment was part of the 9th Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery. It saw service in Europe from 1916 until the end of the war.
Post-war saw a number of changes. The regiment was redesignated the Argyll Light Infantry (Tank) in 1920. An Armoured unit, it maintained that role and designation until 1936, when it was amalgamated with other local reserve units and redesignated The Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment, an Infantry Regiment.
The Regiment was mobilizd on 1 September 1939, following the declaration of War. It saw active service in Europe throughout the war, with a note being its efforts during the Battle of Ortona in Italy in 1943. Following the end of hostilies in 1945, the Hasty P's were the most decorated Regiment in the Canadian Army.
Notable Canadian author and veteran Hasty P Farley Mowat wrote a best-selling book about life in the Hasty P's titled simply "The Regiment". in which he recounted his experiences as a soldier..
The end of WWII saw massive reductions in personnel and a changing role for the Regiment. The Korean Conflict saw the Regiment raise two Active Force companies that were used to augment the Regular Force Infantry battalions.
Following cessation of hostilities, the Regiment reverted to a Priomary Reserve unit. Most recently, the Regiment provided over 20% of its effective strength to the Canadian Army Battle Groups which served in Afghanistan. For their actions, the Regiment was awarded the Battle Honour "Afghanistan" in 2014.
