Geocache Description:

Francais

Disclaimer: Not every geocache is accessible to everyone. This is a scuba diving cache located at 25–28 m depth and requires certification appropriate to that depth (e.g., Open Water is not sufficient; Advanced Open Water or equivalent recommended). Divers should assess conditions, currents, and their own limits before attempting this dive. A log is only valid if it meets the requirements specified below.

The B-17 Wreck of Calvi

On February 14, 1944, the B-17G Her Did (serial 42-31044), 340th Bomb Squadron, 97th Bomb Group, was on a mission to Verona when German fighters attacked, killing three crewmen and setting two engines ablaze. Denied a landing at Calvi's damaged airstrip, pilot 2nd Lt. Frank G. Chaplick ditched the bomber just off the citadel. The aircraft held together long enough for the seven surviving crew to escape; radio operator Robert Householder, tail gunner Tony Duca, and waist gunner George Murphy went down with the plane.

The wreck now lies roughly 200 m offshore, upright on sand at 25–28 m depth, facing the citadel that overlooks it. The airframe — wings, engines, and fuselage — remains largely intact, home to moray eels, scorpionfish, and conger eels. It's widely rated among the most striking wreck dives in the Mediterranean, as much for the wartime story as the setting.

Log requirements: Attach a photo of yourself or a personal item (e.g., dive computer) at the cockpit. Your dive profile is welcome but not sufficient on its own. Example photos are provided below. Logs without a photo will be deleted.

I log senza foto verranno eliminati.
