Geocache Description:

    • Grasfrosch
    • Erdkröte
    • Geburtshelferkröte (mit charakteristischem Glockenruf im Frühling)
Auch zahlreiche Vogelarten nutzen das Gebiet, z. B.:
      • Rohrweihe
      • Zwergtaucher
      • Entenarten
      • Singvögel wie Mönchsgrasmücke und Nachtigall

Aufgabe:

Macht Bitte ein Foto, Geocaching Name oder Teil des Gesichtes sichtbar wäre ein Traum.

Description of the Clay Pit (Tonkuhle) in Lippstadt‑Esbeck

The Esbeck clay pit is a small but ecologically highly valuable protected biotope located on the eastern outskirts of Esbeck. It lies about 300 m from the village entrance along the farm track “Hoffmannsbusch” and is managed by NABU Kreis Soest.

Experience & Access
Within the area, there is a small observation hut overlooking the clay pit — a quiet place for nature observation and leisurely walks.
Dogs are not allowed, nor are open fires or smoking (nature protection regulations).

History
From 1972 to 1983, the brickworks Timmermann extracted “Emscher marl” here, reaching depths of up to 8 m.
This grey marl originates from the younger Cretaceous Sea (approx. 80 million years old) and contains numerous microfossils (foraminifera).
After the extraction ended, the city of Lippstadt briefly planned to use the site as a hazardous‑waste landfill, but this was prevented.
The district of Soest acquired the area and placed it under special environmental protection.

Nature and Landscape
The approximately 1.54‑hectare protected area is now a refuge for many rare animal and plant species.

Due to fluctuating water levels, shallow‑water zones, reed beds, pond vegetation, and a woodland fringe have developed.
The clay pit is considered an excellent amphibian habitat, home to species such as:

  • Common frog
  • Common toad
  • Midwife toad (with its characteristic bell‑like call in spring)

Numerous bird species also use the area, including:

  • Marsh harrier
  • Little grebe
  • Various duck species
  • Songbirds such as the blackcap and nightingale

Task:
Please take a photo — having a visible Geocaching name or a partial view of the face would be wonderful.
