Cache-Beschreibung / Listing:

Oktober 1958 in Betrieb genommen.
Technik

Listing (translation with google AI):
The Geesthacht pumped-storage power plant near Geesthacht on the Elbe River is used to quickly meet electricity demand during peak load periods and serves as an emergency reserve during power outages. The pumped-storage power plant was put into operation on October 15, 1958.
Technology
The Geesthacht upper reservoir is connected to the three machine units in the underground powerhouse via three pressure pipelines (each 3.8 meters in diameter and approximately 600 meters in length) that are visible from afar. Each machine unit consists of a turbine, a motor-generator, and a storage pump. The Elbe River, which flows close to the powerhouse and is appropriately dammed at Geesthacht, serves as the lower reservoir for the turbines and storage pumps.
There is an average height difference of 83 meters between the upper reservoir and the lower reservoir. The upper reservoir has a total volume of 3,800,000 m⊃3;, of which 3,300,000 m⊃3;; is usable.
The turbines each have a capacity of 40 MW, and the storage pumps each have 32 MW. The three motor-generators operate via two transformers into the 110 kV grid. According to the information board, a total energy capacity of 534 MWh can be stored in the upper reservoir.
Upper Reservoir
The upper reservoir covers an area of 500 m × 600 m and has a ring embankment approx. 2,000 m long and approx. 17 m high. Its 6 m wide crest is located at 92.6 m above sea level (NN). The embankment has slopes with an inner incline of 1:2.5 and an outer incline of 1:3.5.
Power Generation
Due to load requirements, the turbines are switched on about 4,800 times a year to cover peak loads. After just 70 seconds, power generation runs at full capacity, which can be delivered for up to five hours depending on the water level of the upper reservoir. The efficiency of the pumped-storage plant is 80%, meaning that four-fifths of the energy expended (for pumping the water up into the upper reservoir, etc.) is recovered through the turbines. The pumped-storage plant is the most important facility for the stability of Hamburg's power supply. It is a black-start capable power plant that can restart other, shut-down power plants in the event of a complete power supply failure.
