The Shootout at the O.K. Corral is the stuff of tall tales and true grit—famous with history buffs, movie lovers, and any cowpoke who appreciates a good dust-up. The broad strokes are well known, but here’s some trail dust you might not have heard:
-
Some folks swear the shootin’ went down right here in the street where you’re standin’. Others’ll tell ya it happened in the skinny alley nearby. History can be a bit slippery when bullets start flying.
-
The first silver-screen telling of the gunfight was Frontier Marshal (1939), with Randolph Scott ridin’ tall as Wyatt Earp.
-
The 1957 flick Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, starin’ Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas, went on to become a bona fide Western classic.
-
Even space cowboys got mixed up in it—Star Trek’s episode “Spectre of the Gun” where Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are forced to re-enact the famous gunfight.
-
Tombstone (1993) and Wyatt Earp (1994) rode into theaters just months apart. When the dust settled, Tombstone was the one still standin’.
-
John Behan was the first Sheriff of Cochise County—and he was wearin’ the badge when the lead started flyin’.
-
The whole gunfight lasted about 30 seconds.
Watch your step, keep your eyes open, and don’t draw faster than you can log… 🤠
