Geocache Description:

Guardians of the Sea - Gruissan Marine Cemetery

Welcome to the Marine Cemetery and the chapel of Notre-Dame-des-Auzils, a historic site located in the La Clape hills above the village of Gruissan.

While walking along this cypress-lined path, you will discover many cenotaphs, memorial monuments dedicated to sailors lost at sea. In the 19th century, fishermen from Gruissan often sailed for days, and sometimes they never returned. Their families built these symbolic graves to honor relatives whose bodies were never found.

Each stone tells a story.

Each engraved name reflects the deep connection between Gruissan and the sea.

At the top of the path stands the chapel of Notre-Dame-des-Auzils overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and the La Clape massif. Take your time to enjoy the scenery and the peaceful atmosphere of this memorial place.
