Geocache Description:

                                                                               Notre-Dame de la Salette

FR:

The origin of the chapel remains mysterious. Initially, there was said to be a small oratory on which Notre-Dame de la Salette was built in 1867, following the Marian fervor of Christians due to the apparitions of the Virgin at La Salette near Corps in 1856.

The sisters of the Loyette convent often accompanied children on pilgrimages there on the first Sundays of September. This pilgrimage ended up falling into neglect.Shortly after the liberation, the 27th Fighter Group, which is a fighter group of the American military aviation, set up its airstrip near Loyette to allowplanes to stay available for the retreating German troops.

On the morning of September 11, 1944, a liaison plane, a twin-engine Mitchell B-25D,serial 4287440, crashed into the top of the hill while approaching the airstrip, killing the three crew members and the twelve passengers on board.

Today, a commemorative plaque is located on the outside wall of Notre Dame de la Salette, offered by the parishioners of Leyrieu to remember the accident.
