25 Years of the Texas Challenge - Enchanted Rock (2009)
Over 25 years ago a group of cachers (UsMorrows, 9Key, Cybercat, CacheReward, and Moosiegirl) got together and came up with an idea of creating a statewide event that celebrated geocaching. In addition to the fun and fellowship, the centerpiece of this event was a competition to determine annual bragging rights for the “Best Geocaching” group in Texas. The winning team receives the coveted Golden Ammo Can. Over the years this event has morphed and evolved but the core idea remains, and Texas Challenge is the longest running event of its kind and the longest running Mega event.
In March of 2027, TXGA will be celebrating our 25th Annual Texas Challenge in West Texas. To help commemorate this incredible milestone TXGA is announcing a special project - 25 Years of Texas Challenges. Starting in March of 2026 - TXGA will be releasing a series of 25 Anniversary Caches. Each of these caches will be hidden “near” the location of that year’s Challenge and will have information and history of that specific Challenge. In addition to the normal contents - each cache will contain a special punch that corresponds to that year’s event and a number of Passports. (Scorecards can also be downloaded from the TXGA website using the link above). The first 50 people to find all 25 asnniversary caches and complete the scorecards by punching their passports will receive a commemorative 25 Years of Texas Challenge Coin. The coins will be delivered at a special award ceremony at the 25th Texas Challenge in March 2027. Who knows there may also be some other interesting prizes available along the way so pay attention to the contents of the caches and the cache pages!
This activity is being sponsored by the Texas Geocaching Association (TXGA) the group that promotes and supports geocaching in Texas. If you are new to geocaching and/or want more info abou this or other TXGA activities check us out Texas Geocaching Association (TXGA)

7th Annual Texas Challenge (GC1G269)
Date: March 14, 2009
Location: Enchanted Rock SP
Attended: 204
Winning Team – See Description Below
What sets this one apart:
-
- ALTERNATE FORMAT – 2-4 Person Teams vs. Region Competition. Cachers used rubber stamps
- First MEDICAL EVACUATION (Litter carry down the hill, ambulance ride to Fredricksburg, and a Helicopter ride to Austin) In the end it all turned out OK.
In 2009, the CenTex team decided to mix things up a bit and change some of the competitive elements. The Region Team based competition was shifted to the Fierce competitors in 2-4 person teams and the Casual Cache Tour for those that wanted to go at a slower pace. 35 Teams (101 cachers) signed up in the Fierce category despite serious weather concerns all week leading up to the event. The event was a huge success covering the Enchanted Rock SP – lots of climbing, running and finding and most of the teams enjoyed the format. During the competition one of the cachers experienced a medical emergency. Fortunately, nearby cachers immediately jumped to the cachers assistance providing first aid, contacting authorities, working with the EMTs to evacuate the cacher to an ambulance and then helping to get his wife to the hospital to be with her husband. After initial diagnosis in Fredricksburg, the cacher got a ride in a helicopter to a nAustin hospital where they were able to diagnose and successfully treat the issue. The caching community rose to the challenge and helped save one of our own. Special kudos to Loco Lupine, 1st Sgt ,lacanthorn, caveman, and Roland_Oso who all dropped everything to care for our colleague.
It is difficult to discern the official finishers but from the logs these seem to be the Top 3 Teams:
- Persied88 and MrTechie (1st Place Overall)
- Indigo Parrish/Soaring Eagle (2nd Place Overall?)
- Roland-oso, coachgreg, Techiegrl64, Guido71 (2nd Place Overall?)
