W latach 1947–1950 Dzień Wojska wyznaczono na 9 maja, łącząc go z Narodowym Świętem Zwycięstwa i Wolności.

W kolejnych latach charakter wydarzenia ewoluował od formy ściśle oficjalnej w latach dziewięćdziesiątych do masowych defilad z udziałem lotnictwa i sprzętu pancernego, zapoczątkowanych w 2007 roku.

#108 Polish Armed Forces Day - 15 August

Polish Army Day was originally established in August 1923 as Soldiers' Day by order of the Minister of Military Affairs, General of the Army Stanisław Szeptycki. The chosen date commemorated a pivotal moment in the Polish–Bolshevik War of 1920, when units of the 21st Mountain Division crossed the River Wieprz. This manoeuvre marked the start of a counter-offensive that led to the collapse of the Russian Western Front.

The holiday was celebrated in the Second Polish Republic, during the Second World War by the Polish Armed Forces in the West, and in the early post-war years. From 1947 onwards, celebrations on 15 August were discontinued. The August anniversary served as too stark a reminder of the Red Army’s defeat. Between 1947 and 1950, Army Day was set for 9 May, combining it with the National Day of Victory and Freedom. From October 1950, the new date became 12 October — the anniversary of the Battle of Lenino, in which the 1st Tadeusz Kościuszko Infantry Division took part. Polish Army Day was last celebrated on 12 October 1989.

The political transition changed the calendar of celebrations. Between 1990 and 1992, military parades were organised as part of the celebrations for Constitution Day on 3 May. The former order was finally restored by a Sejm Act of July 1992, reinstating the August 15 date under its current name. That same year, the first central commemorations were organised in Warsaw, in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The pre-war format of the celebrations included evening bugle calls, morning parades and religious services.

Nowadays, the key event is the official state ceremony attended by the President. Over the years, the nature of the event has evolved from a strictly formal affair in the 1990s to mass parades featuring the air force and armoured vehicles, which began in 2007.

To get the coordinates, answer the following questions:

1. Name the Minister of Military Affairs who introduced this public holiday in 1923.

2. What was the original name of this public holiday when it was established?

3. In which year did a Sejm Act reinstate the celebration of this holiday on 15 August?

4. In which year was this day last celebrated on 12 October?
