#077 Wyzwolenie Bredy (28 - 30 października 1944)

Wyzwolenie Bredy jesienią 1944 roku stanowiło jeden z najważniejszych sukcesów militarnych 1. Dywizji Pancernej oraz kluczowy etap alianckiej ofensywy w kierunku ujścia rzeki Mozy. Sukces ten pozwolił zabezpieczyć strategiczne linie zaopatrzeniowe sprzymierzonych w północno-zachodniej Europie.

Tło i przyczyny konfliktu
Zadanie zdobycia miasta powierzono 1. Dywizji Pancernej dowodzonej przez generała Stanisława Maczka.

Siły stron i przygotowania
Polska dywizja działała w składzie II Korpusu Kanadyjskiego i dysponowała siłami pancernymi, piechotą oraz artylerią. Naprzeciw niej stanęły niemieckie 256., 711. i 719.

Przebieg starcia i kluczowe manewry
Natarcie rozpoczęło się 28 października 1944 roku. Polskie oddziały najpierw wyparły Niemców z przedpola Bredy, a następnie rozpoczęły właściwe natarcie. 10.

Wynik bitwy i bezpośrednie skutki

1. Podaj kryptonim alianckiej operacji, w ramach której doszło do wyzwolenia Bredy.

2. W kierunku ujścia jakiej rzeki prowadzono aliancką ofensywę, której kluczowym etapem było wyzwolenie Bredy?

3. Podaj nazwisko dowódcy polskiej 1. Dywizji Pancernej podczas operacji.

#077 Liberation of Breda (28 - 30 October 1944)

The liberation of Breda in the autumn of 1944 was one of the most significant military successes of the 1st Armoured Division and a crucial stage in the Allied offensive towards the mouth of the Meuse. This success made it possible to secure the Allies’ strategic supply lines in north-western Europe.

Conflict Background
Following the Allied victory in Normandy, German troops were retreating through France, Belgium and the Netherlands. As part of the Allied Operation 'Pheasant', the objective was to secure North Brabant and safeguard key transport routes leading towards the Meuse river. Breda was a key road, rail and river junction, which is why the Germans had fortified it as one of the main strongpoints in the region. The task of capturing the city was entrusted to the 1st Armoured Division, commanded by General Stanisław Maczek.

Force Preparation
The Polish division was operating as part of the II Canadian Corps and had armoured units, infantry and artillery at its disposal. Opposing it were the German 256th, 711th and 719th Infantry Divisions, supported by anti-tank artillery. The Germans expected an attack from the west, where the main Allied offensive was unfolding. General Maczek decided against carrying out standard artillery preparation and bombing raids in order to avoid civilian casualties and damage to historic buildings. He decided to employ a flanking manoeuvre, involving a rapid 90-degree turn and an attack on the city from the east and north-east, where the German defences were at their weakest.

Battle Progress
The offensive began on 28 October 1944. Polish units first drove the Germans out of the Breda outskirts, and then launched the main offensive. The 10th Armoured Cavalry Brigade flanked the town from the north and, after manoeuvring round it, struck from the east – that is, from the direction where defences were weaker. The element of surprise forced the German troops to withdraw from the town. At the same time, the use of heavy artillery and bombardment was avoided, meaning that the fighting was concentrated outside the built-up area. These measures limited the damage and helped to avoid civilian casualties.

Battle Aftermath
As a result of the operation, the Dutch city was liberated without any civilian fatalities and with minimal damage to the urban infrastructure. This success paved the way for the Allies to secure the mouth of the Meuse River and facilitated further offensive operations in the Netherlands.

To get the coordinates, answer the following questions:

1. What was the codename of the Allied operation during which Breda was liberated?

2. Towards the mouth of which river was the Allied offensive directed, the key stage of which was the liberation of Breda?

3. Name the commander of the Polish 1st Armoured Division during the operation.

4. What tactical manoeuvre did the Polish forces employ to bypass the German defences and take the garrison by surprise?

We recommend exploring the GeoTrail on foot or by bike. We strongly advise against attempting to drive the route by car, even in areas where the road is not blocked by barriers. The entire forest area is under surveillance, and driving a vehicle inside carries the risk of receiving a fine.
