#074 Powstanie Warszawskie - Zdobycie PAST-y (19 - 20 sierpnia 1944)
|
Tło i przyczyny konfliktu
Siły stron i przygotowania
Do decydującego natarcia skierowano około 250 żołnierzy Batalionu „Kiliński” dowodzonego przez rotmistrza Henryka Roycewicza „Leliwę”, wspieranych przez grupy saperskie, minerskie, żołnierzy 3. Kompanii Szturmowej Obszaru „Koszta” oraz Kobiece Patrole Minerskie. Przed szturmem przygotowano ładunki wybuchowe do wykonania wyłomu w sąsiedniej kamienicy oraz strażacką motopompę, która miała posłużyć do wtłoczenia do wnętrza budynku mieszanki paliw.
Przebieg starcia i kluczowe manewry
W nocy z 19 na 20 sierpnia 1944 roku powstańcy rozpoczęli decydujący szturm. Najpierw wysadzili fragment ściany przylegającej kamienicy, tworząc wyłom umożliwiający wtargnięcie do budynku. Atak prowadzono jednocześnie z trzech stron, stopniowo przejmując kolejne piętra aż do kapitulacji obrońców.
Wynik bitwy i bezpośrednie skutki

#074 Warsaw Uprising - The Capture of PAST (19 - 20 August 1944)
|
The capture of the PAST building was one of the most significant military successes of the Warsaw Uprising. Seizing the heavily fortified building of the Polish Joint-Stock Telephone Company at 39 Zielna Street was of both military and operational importance, as the Germans were using it as an observation post and a key communications hub. After capturing the building, the insurgents prevented the Germans from firing from its top floors and took control of a strategic point in Śródmieście.
Conflict Background
From the very first days of the Warsaw Uprising, Home Army units attempted to capture the PAST building. The building was manned by a large, well-armed German garrison, which, thanks to the building’s height, controlled the surrounding streets and fired on the insurgents’ positions and the civilian population. A series of failed attacks showed that capturing the building would require coordinated action by sappers, infantry and assault teams.
Force Preparation
Around 250 soldiers from the ‘Kiliński’ battalion, commanded by Captain Henryk Roycewicz ‘Leliwa’, were deployed for the decisive assault, supported by sapper and mining units, soldiers from the 3rd Assault Company of the ‘Koszta’ Sector, and the Women’s Mining Patrols. Prior to the assault, explosives were prepared to breach the adjacent tenement building, along with a fire brigade motor pump, which was to be used to pump a fuel mixture into the building.
Battle Progress
On the night of 19–20 August 1944, the insurgents launched a decisive assault. First, they blew up a section of the wall of the adjacent tenement block, creating a new entrance to the building. They then used a motor pump to force a mixture of fuels into the building and set fire to successive storeys. The fire forced the German garrison to abandon their positions, enabling the assault units to enter the building and engage in combat in the stairwells and rooms. The attack was launched simultaneously from three sides, gradually taking control of successive floors until the defenders surrendered.
Battle Aftermath
On 20 August 1944, the PAST building was captured. Over 120 German soldiers were taken prisoner, and the building remained in the hands of the insurgents until the end of the fighting in Warsaw. The capture of the building improved the situation of the Home Army forces in Śródmieście, limited the Germans’ ability to observe and fire upon the area, and became one of the most recognisable military successes of the Warsaw Uprising.

We recommend exploring the GeoTrail on foot or by bike. We strongly advise against attempting to drive the route by car, even in areas where the road is not blocked by barriers. The entire forest area is under surveillance, and driving a vehicle inside carries the risk of receiving a fine.
