Geocache Description:

Washboard Coast – Ridges and Grooves on a Wave-Cut Platform

Ridges, Grooves, Surf – How the Sea Shapes Coastal Limestone

Observation only · Please do not remove or damage anything

This coast is not a smooth rock floor – it is a workshop of wave action. At this location you are standing on a marine wave-cut platform made of limestone/calcarenite. At suitable water levels, waves overtop the platform as a thin sheet of water. Sand and pebbles carried by the waves act like sandpaper: the rock is abraded – but not everywhere at the same rate.

The result is a distinct ridges-and-grooves relief (like a “washboard”): ridges remain where the rock is more resistant, while grooves form where the rock is more porous, less well cemented, or mechanically weaker. In addition, small rock pools and scours develop, where water and sediment swirl and continue grinding the surface.

Wave overflow + sand/pebbles as abrasives → differential erosion → ridges (more resistant) & grooves (more porous) → rock pools/scours

Logging tasks

Please send your answers by email to the cache owner. You are welcome to post a public “Found it” log without solutions/details. Important: no scratching, breaking, or collecting – observation is enough.

  1. Identify ridges & grooves:
Describe the pattern: are the grooves/ridges mostly straight, slightly curved, or irregular? Mention one clear feature you can see on site.
  2. Direction / orientation:
Do the grooves run mostly parallel to the coastline or more toward the sea? Briefly justify using your observation (no measuring needed).
  3. Energy comparison:
Compare the calmer pool zone with the exposed surf zone: where is abrasion stronger? Name one visible clue (e.g., roughness, groove depth, sharp/fresh edges, frequent overtopping).
  4. Rock pool / scour:
Find a round depression (rock pool/scour). What could be the abrasive material here (sand/pebbles/small stones), and how does it work inside the depression? Explain in 2–3 sentences.
  5. Required photo:
Upload a photo at the listed coordinates with either yourself or a personal object (e.g., GPS, pen, notebook) on or directly next to the platform.

Safety & respect

  • The platform can be wet and slippery – take care, especially during wave overtopping.
  • Keep a safe distance from the edge in rough conditions and avoid unnecessary risk.
  • No tools, no scratching, no collecting. Observe, compare, understand.

Learning goal

Learn how wave energy, together with sand/pebbles as abrasives, shapes a wave-cut platform. Due to differential erosion (differences in cementation and porosity within the limestone), ridges and grooves form, along with rock pools as small-scale abrasion features.

Enjoy exploring the coast – Andrimas

Logging-Aufgaben

Bitte schicke deine Antworten per E-Mail an den Owner. Du kannst natürlich „Found it“-Log ohne Lösungen/Details schreiben. Wichtig: Bitte nichts kratzen, nichts abbrechen und nichts entnehmen – Beobachtung reicht.

  1. Rippen & Rinnen erkennen:
Erkläre in 2–3 Sätzen.
  5. Pflichtfoto:

  • Keine Werkzeuge, kein Kratzen, kein Sammeln. Nur schauen, vergleichen, verstehen.

Lernziel
