Geocache Description:

  2. Baryte vs scolécite : prisme court ou prisme long

English:

This EarthCache invites you to discover five minerals displayed in the Galerie des Arcs (access via the intermediate Transarc station): barite, scolecite, orange calcite, pyrite and crocoite. Through these samples, you will observe different crystal shapes and see how geologists classify these minerals into the seven crystal systems.

Crystals are natural solids whose atoms are arranged in a regular lattice called a crystal unit cell. This unit cell repeats in space and gives the crystal its characteristic geometric shape. There are seven main crystal systems: triclinic, monoclinic, orthorhombic, tetragonal (quadratic), trigonal, hexagonal and cubic. At the scale of a hand specimen, the crystal system can often be recognized from the overall shape: cubes, prisms, plates, needles or diamonds (rhombohedra).

A bright red crocoite, often forming thin needles, shows how the same type of elongated shape can be found in different minerals, but with different colors and compositions. On site, carefully observe the display case, read the information panels and labels, then move on to the questions.

To log this EarthCache, go inside the Galerie des Arcs, observe the following minerals and answer the questions below by private message (please do not publish your answers in your log).

  1. Pyrite: the cubic shape
    • Find a sample of pyrite. Describe the shape of its crystals: about how many main faces can you see?
    • Do the angles appear close to 90° or not? Indicate which crystal system this shape makes you think of.
  2. Barite vs scolecite: short prism or long prism
    • Observe the barite. Describe the shape of its crystals: plates, bars, compact block, etc.
    • Then find the scolecite, often forming thin prisms or needles. Describe the shape of its crystals.
    • In one sentence, explain the visual difference between barite and scolecite, even though they belong to the same crystal system.
  3. Orange calcite: the rhombohedron
    • Locate a sample of orange calcite. Indicate the shape of its crystals (for example: “diamond-shaped”, “like a distorted cube”).
    • Which crystal system do you associate with this particular “twisted cube” shape?
    • Propose one sentence explaining why not all calcite crystals are perfect rhombohedra.
  4. Crocoite: thin red needles
    • Look for the mineral crocoite in the gallery. Describe the shape of its crystals: needles, thin bars, clusters, etc.
    • Indicate which crystal system corresponds to this general shape.
    • In one sentence, compare the appearance of crocoite with that of scolecite.
  5. (Optional) Photo

Optional: take a photo of one of the samples (barite, scolecite, calcite, pyrite or crocoite) with your GPS or a visible personal item, without revealing the answers. Attach it to your message if you wish.

Log this cache as 'Found it' and send me your proposed answers either through my profile or via the geocaching.com messaging system (Message Center), and I will contact you if there's an issue."
