Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the stated coordinates. The former railway station in Helmsley is now a private residence.

In the 19th Century, Helmsley was dominated by the Earl of Feversham. In agreeing to allow the North Eastern Railway (NER) to open a railway line to Helmsley a clause in the 1865 agreement between the Leeds, North Yorkshire and Durham Railway (favoured by Lord Feversham) and the NER stipulated that 'the North Eastern Company to provide Helmsley a First Class station for passengers (including 1st and 2nd class waiting rooms for ladies) with efficient accommodation for goods and timber and proper loading places for carriages'. The result was that Helmsley station was unlike any other on the line.

It was based on one of the standard designs by NER Architect, Thomas Prosser, with a central two-storey section parallel to the platform, and single-storey cross wings projecting at each end, front and back. On the platform side the projections were carried forward by a long glazed veranah which provided shelter for waiting passengers. Built with local sandstone the detail was in keeping with its aristocratic status.
