Good morning rappelling clinic
No rappelling is needed to attend this event. It is primarily a social hang out that happens to include talking about and practicing techniques to access some of the rappel geocaches in town. There is some terrain to overcome to reach the event using the walkaround waypoints part 1 & 2 to the top of the cliffs.
Parking and approach
This rappelling event is at the Upper Ross Park basalt cliffs known as shady side. There is roadside parking right next to the park, parking at the 'Visit Pocatello' information center, and parking along Restlawn drive. You will easily see the cliffs plain as day. We are meeting at the top of them. Some people scramble up the stair like section around climb route 30 (with the metal spool on top), some take the skinny switchbacking trail up the cliffs just to the south of this cliff section, but the safest and recommended option is to follow the tarmac path north to the walkaround waypoints that follow turf onto the disc golf course and along the top of the cliffs. Keep an eye out for people launching discs off the top of the hill as you walk that way.
Stay close to the fence to your right as you approach the event coordinates and away from the cliff edge. For safety we are having people stay away from the edge until they are harnessed up so they may be anchored or tethered in.
The Rappel
We will be using a twin rope isolated non-releasable set up off of rappelling chains that have passed the scrutiny of the town's liability experts. This is strong enough to hang a car off, but let's not. Usual safe rappelling will be observed - B.A.R.K. checks every time (buckle and harness check, anchor check, rappel device setup check, and knots in the end of the rope check). Brake hand kept on the brake strand, rappel extended, and third hand hitch (autoblock, kleimheist, or prussik) used. We will have line of sight and easy hearing due to the shortness of the cliffs.
Climbing gear will be available to borrow at the event, but you are welcome to bring your own if you wish.
