Pethő Sándor Square and the Parish Church of St. Teresa, Budapest VI District
Pethő Sándor Square is a small, peaceful public space in Terézváros (Budapest’s 6th District), located beside the historic Parish Church of St. Teresa of Ávila. Although modest in size, the square forms an attractive urban setting that connects the church with nearby schools and residential streets, offering a quiet retreat in one of Budapest’s busiest central districts. In 2023, following changes to local street names, the remaining section of the square retained the name Pethő Sándor tér, commemorating Pethő Sándor (1885–1940), the journalist, historian, and founder of the newspaper Magyar Nemzet.
Dominating the square is the Parish Church of St. Teresa of Ávila, the oldest church in Terézváros. The parish was established in 1777, and construction of the present church began in 1801 based on the designs of Fidél Kasselik. The church combines Baroque, Classical, and Gothic Revival architectural elements. In 1871, the renowned architect Miklós Ybl redesigned the tower with its distinctive copper spire and added a rare fire-watch balcony around the bell tower. Inside, visitors can admire the historic Angster organ, an ornate gilded wooden chandelier originally from Budapest’s former Vigadó ballroom, and a peaceful interior that continues to serve the local parish community.
Today, Pethő Sándor Square and the Parish Church of St. Teresa together create a charming historic corner of Budapest, where the district’s cultural heritage, religious traditions, and architectural beauty come together in a welcoming public space.
