Ojos de Agua
Welcome to one of San Marcos' colorful tributes to the thing that makes this city so special—its water.
"Ojos de Agua," Spanish for "Eyes of the Water" or "Springs," celebrates the crystal-clear springs that give birth to the San Marcos River. For thousands of years, these springs have provided life to people, wildlife, and the surrounding landscape. Long before the city or the university existed, this was a place where Native peoples gathered around one of Texas' most reliable sources of fresh water.
Take a moment to appreciate the mural and its many details. Public art has become an important part of downtown San Marcos, transforming ordinary walls into stories about the city's history, culture, and connection to the river.
Did You Know?
💧 The San Marcos Springs are among the largest natural springs in Texas, producing millions of gallons of crystal-clear water every day.
🌡️ The river remains a refreshing 72°F year-round, making it a favorite destination for swimming, tubing, kayaking, and snorkeling.
🐟 Several rare and endangered species, including the Texas Blind Salamander and Fountain Darter, depend on these spring-fed waters and are found nowhere else in the world.
