Geocache Description:

Torrent de Cipetto 💦

🇲🇫

🇬🇧

The Cipetto stream is a remarkable natural site for canyoning and swimming, located in Volpajola, Haute-Corse. This fun-filled aquatic route features clear pools, jumps, and natural slides set amidst the rocky landscape typical of the island.

Questions: Once you are facing the rock, observe and answer:

1 - Based on how it feels to the touch, what is the texture/appearance of this rock?

2 - To the right of the spoiler photo, what is the color of the rock and, above all, why?

3 - On the ground, you can see pebbles of various colors, some of which are red (ranging to violet or pink). What is the origin of this hue?

4 - Take a photo of yourself or an object representing you (without revealing the answer).

EarthCache Rules: "Log this cache as 'Found it' and send me your proposed answers either via my profile or the messaging system; I will contact you if there are any issues."

Rock characteristics:

Geological nature: It is not a single mineral but a folded metamorphic rock.

Composition: Cipolin is an impure marble formed by the metamorphism of calcareous sediments. Its light-colored bands alternate with greenish layers rich in silicate minerals such as chlorite, epidote, or actinolite.

Local context: The Cipetto torrent (a tributary of the Golo) flows through the Eastern Alpine Corsica zone (the *Schistes Lustrés* nappe). This geological unit is renowned for its spectacular folded structures, formed under intense tectonic pressure.

Appearance: The smooth, undulating surface of this block is the result of continuous abrasive action by water and sediment carried by the torrent during flood events.

This rock belongs to the prasinite family. Originally, it was basalt or gabbro (dark volcanic rocks) that formed the floor of an ancient ocean. During the formation of the Alps and Alpine Corsica, these rocks were buried, compressed, and stretched by colossal tectonic forces, creating these magnificent folds and undulations.

Why is this rock sometimes green? The green color is not due to a single mineral but to the transformation of the rock's original dark minerals into a blend of three new green minerals characteristic of the "greenschist" facies: Chlorite (a micaceous silicate mineral producing a distinct olive-to-bottle-green hue), Epidote (a hard mineral providing pistachio-green or yellowish-green shades), and Actinolite (an intense green, fibrous amphibole).

Presence of jasper or radiolarite veins: Fragments of fossilized ocean floor (ophiolites) are frequently found within the Alpine Corsica complexes. These formations contain very hard, silica-rich sedimentary rocks known as radiolarites or red jaspers, which retain their crimson luster even after being polished by water.

Happy geocaching, everyone! 😎
