Geocache Description:

A Little Riverhead Farm History

Geocaching and historical markers are two of my favorite things to combine. I love finding those little pieces of history hiding in plain sight, learning something I probably never would have known, and having a cache give me a reason to stop and explore.  Sometimes I just stand there and envision what it looked like in that different time (and then Mason usually honks at me to keep going).

Riverhead Farm was established in 1905 by William Green as an ambitious agricultural operation along the San Marcos River. The farm used river water for irrigation and raised livestock while producing a variety of crops, including onions, fruits, and vegetables.

The operation also made innovative use of hydroelectric power, using electricity for irrigation and even producing ice to help keep farm products cool while being shipped to market by rail.

Although Riverhead Farm operated for only a few years, it remains an interesting example of early innovation in agriculture, irrigation, and technology in the San Marcos area.

This is a two-stage multi-cache, and everything you need to locate the final can be found at the posted coordinates.

At the historical marker, find the four-digit year associated with the historical marker.

Then look nearby for a second sign concerning access to the property. From the phone number listed on that sign, record the last four digits.

Put the two together:

4-digit historical year+ last 4 digits of phone number

Enter that 8-digit number into Certitude to receive the coordinates for the final, which is just a short drive down Lime Kiln Road.

Please respect the property and the historical site — there's no need to cross any fences or enter restricted areas.

Enjoy the quick history lesson, solve the combination, and go find the final!

Happy caching!
