🚨 NOTE DE SÉCURITÉ IMPORTANTE :
Note importante pour la zone intertidale :

The Stone Veins of Barfleur - Pegmatite Dike of the Intertidal Zone
Â
Welcome to the rocky coast of Barfleur! This Earthcache takes you into the intertidal zone, where the sea has washed away the sediment to expose an impressive geological window into the Earth's deep past.
🚨 IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE:
- This Earthcache can ONLY BE DONE AT LOW TIDE! At high tide, the entire rocky plateau is completely flooded. You must check the local tide table for Barfleur before your visit and plan to enter the rocky area only during low tide.
🎒 Required Equipment:
- A folding ruler or measuring tape.
- Above all, your own senses and your fingernail for the non-destructive field test.
The coordinates of the description (Waypoint 1) correspond to Station 1 (Rocky Plateau). Waypoint 2 corresponds to Station 2 and marks a spectacular position in the middle of the large rocky plateau in the sea.
1. The Foundation: The Barfleur Granite (Station 1)
The solid bedrock you are standing on at low tide is the famous Barfleur Granite. It is a magmatic plutonic rock.
- When was it formed? Around 320 million years ago (during the Variscan orogeny in the Carboniferous period).
- How was it formed? Deep beneath the Earth's crust, hot, liquid magma pushed upward. Because it was insulated by thick layers of rock, it cooled extremely slowly over hundreds of thousands of years. This gave the atoms enough time to arrange themselves into large, visible crystals.
The Phenomenon of Megacrystals (Porphyritic Texture):
Before we turn our attention to the stone veins, we first need to look at and understand the surrounding rock. When looking at the granite here (Station 1), we do not focus on its erosion or its human use; in this Earthcache, we are exclusively interested in the size and structure of the crystals. It features a porphyritic texture. This means that in a finer-grained, gray groundmass, individual, remarkably large, and angular potassium feldspar crystals are embedded. These first crystals formed at the very beginning of the cooling process, when the magma was still largely liquid, allowing them to grow undisturbed. The structure of the rock in front of us reveals a distinct two-stage cooling history: at first, the magma cooled extremely slowly and stably deep underground, allowing the large feldspar crystals to develop. Later on, the remaining melt cooled down significantly faster, creating the surrounding fine gray groundmass with its numerous small feldspars embedded within it. These observations serve as an ideal baseline to clearly appreciate the extreme contrast with the giant crystals inside the pegmatite dike at Station 2.
2. The Megastructures: The Secret of the Pegmatite Dikes (Station 2)
As you walk out toward the Station 2 you will discover a monumental dike cutting through the granite. A bright, massive vein intersects the darker rocky plateau. Geologists call these structures pegmatites. These dikes spread out like underground walls and can reach considerable lengths in this region.
When the magma chamber was almost completely solidified 320 million years ago, the rock contracted and cracks formed. The remaining, highly mineral- and water-rich residual magma pressed into these fissures. Because this residual melt cooled even slower, the minerals inside were able to grow into true giant crystals.
The ratio between the length and width reveals the cause of formation to geologists: narrow but extremely long dikes indicate major regional tectonic tension fractures within the Earth's crust, while short cracks are merely minor local contractions of the rock block.
The Composition of the Pegmatite Dike:
In such a vein, many different mineral components are hidden at the microscopic level. Tiny traces of silvery-bright muscovite mica or microscopic crystals of apatite, zircon, and magnetite are scattered throughout the stone, but are barely visible without a magnifying glass. We therefore limit ourselves to the four main minerals that dominate the rock and that you can easily recognize with the naked eye:
- Feldspar (mainly potassium feldspar/microcline): Forms the main bulk of the dike. You can recognize it by the large, angular blocks that are white, cream-colored, or slightly yellowish-beige due to weathering.
- Quartz: Fills the remaining cavities. In pegmatite, it is often greasy-lustrous, milky-white to light gray. It may shimmer yellowish due to minerals dissolved in the seawater.
- Biotite (Dark Mica): These are the striking, dark to deep black patches inside the vein. They form flat, flaky layers that glitter like tiny mirrors in the sunlight.
- Schorl (Black Tourmaline): Occasionally, this deep black mineral mixes in with the mica, often forming needle-like or column-like crystals in the light feldspar.
3. The Field Test: Which dark mineral is inside the dike?
With a simple geological field test, you can solve the mystery of the dark areas inside the pegmatite dike. We look at two properties: scratch hardness (Mohs hardness) and cleavage.
- Biotite (Dark Mica): Has a low Mohs hardness of 2.5. It grows in flat, flaky layers and can theoretically be split into wafer-thin sheets using a steel blade. However, since we want to strictly protect this coastal geotope, we will use a non-destructive method on site: with gentle pressure from your fingernail, the edges of the mineral can be split into tiny, wafer-thin flakes.
- Schorl (Black Tourmaline):Â Has a high Mohs hardness of 7 to 7.5 and is harder than pocket-knife steel (cannot be scratched). It forms straight, needle- or column-like crystals. It features a rigid crystalline shape and is completely solid and unyielding. It cannot be peeled with a fingernail at all.
Important Note for the Intertidal Zone:
The waves of the English Channel act like a gigantic grinding machine. They wash away soft, weathered layers instantly. The rock directly on the shore is therefore extremely compact, fresh, and often covered with a fine crust of salt and algae. For a clear test result, the surface must be clean!
📝 Logging Tasks
You can log this cache as "Found it" immediately. However, you must send your answers to the following questions via the Message Center or email at the same time:
Â
Questions about the Granite (Station 1): Baseline for Crystal Comparison
- Cooling and Crystal Size: What crucial influence did the location deep underground have on the cooling of the magma and the size of the resulting crystals?
Â
- Reference Size and Color: Observe the potassium feldspar crystals embedded in the gray granite at station 1. What color are these giant crystals predominantly here, and what is the approximate length (in centimeters) of the largest crystal you can find?
- Your geological conclusion:Â If you compare the size of your found crystal with the much finer gray groundmass and the other smaller crystals, what does this contrast reveal about the cooling speed of the magma? Explain why this process shows two distinct stages of cooling.
Â
- Growth Structure: Examine the outer shape of these feldspar crystals in the granite bedrock. Do the edges and surfaces appear perfectly geometric and distinct, or blurry and merged with the gray groundmass?
Â
Questions about the Large Dike (Station 2):
- Measuring the Dike: You are now standing directly on the large, prominent dike (Station 2) on the exposed sea plateau. Examine the dimensions of this pegmatite dike:
- Roughly how long is the visible dike here (pacing or estimation)?
- How wide is this dike at its widest point?
- Briefly describe the dominant color of the dike compared to the surrounding granite.
- Your geological conclusion:Â Looking at the ratio of your measurements and based on the text, is this a major regional tectonic tension fracture in the Earth's crust or just a minor local shrinkage crack? Briefly justify your choice.
Â
- The Field Test on the Dike: Find a spot with dark/black inclusions directly in the pegmatite dike at Station 2. Clean it briefly of algae/salt. Carefully test the structure with your fingernail (or describe the theoretical scratchability).
- Your geological conclusion: Can the mineral be split into flat, wafer-thin flakes, or does it feature a rigid crystalline shape? Which of the dark minerals mentioned in the listing (Biotite or Schorl) is in front of you
