Docteur Lapis : Du calme, Monsieur Desgrange.

Henri Desgrange : Alors, Docteur ? C'est grave ? Je me désagrège ?

Docteur Lapis : Pas du tout. Mon assistant a l'œil vif.

Henri Desgrange : Mais toutes ces boursouflures ? Qu'est-ce que c'est alors ?

Docteur Lapis : De la chirurgie esthétique, cher Monsieur ! Le sculpteur a utilisé une "boucharde".

Henri Desgrange : Une quoi ?

Henri Desgrange : Ah... me voilà rassuré. Mais attendez !

Docteur Lapis : Quoi encore ?

Henri Desgrange : Vivant ?! Sur ma belle redingote de pierre ?! Je vais m'évanouir.

Docteur Lapis : Du nerf, Desgrange !

Henri Desgrange : Des champignons ? À 2500 mètres d'altitude ?!

Docteur Lapis : Exactement.

Henri Desgrange : Mais ils me dévorent !

  THE CONSULTATION IN ENGLISH

Welcome to Col du Galibier, at over 2,500 meters above sea level! Facing the extreme elements of the alpine climate stands the stele paying tribute to Henri Desgrange, the famous creator of the Tour de France.

Today, the monument seems to be suffering from a mysterious ailment. Let's follow Doctor Lapis, an eminent specialist in mineral health, called in as an emergency to the patient's bedside.

Henri Desgrange (the stele): Doctor Lapis, at last! Come up quickly, it's serious!

Doctor Lapis: Calm down, Mr. Desgrange. What's going on? Is the fresh air of the Galibier not agreeing with you anymore?

Henri Desgrange: Look at me! My skin is pulling, it's all bumpy on the sides... And in the middle, it's completely smooth!

Doctor Lapis: Hmmm...

Henri Desgrange: It's stone leprosy, I knew it!

Doctor Lapis: Come now, don't be so dramatic. Let me examine all of this.
Fellow geocacher, put on your lab coat—you are my assistant for the day! Answer this 1st question to validate your visit: Approach and gently touch the central part where the map of France and the text are located, then run your hand over the rest of the perimeter and the base of the monument. Describe the color and texture of these 2 areas. Observing the small grains under the surface, would you say it is the same rock worked in two different ways, or two rocks of completely distinct origins glued together?

Henri Desgrange: Well, Doctor? Is it serious? Am I falling apart?

Doctor Lapis: Not at all. My assistant has a sharp eye.

Henri Desgrange: But all these bumps? What are they, then?

Doctor Lapis: Cosmetic surgery, my dear sir! The sculptor used a "bush-hammer" (boucharde).

Henri Desgrange: A what? An axe?!

Doctor Lapis: A hammer with steel points! He struck the stone forcefully to make it rough—that's what we call a "bush-hammered" finish. The center, on the other hand, was gently polished to engrave your name.

Henri Desgrange: Ah... that's a relief. But wait!

Doctor Lapis: What now?

Henri Desgrange: Don't you see? I'm covered in spots! I'm sure I've caught the measles! Look, I'm covered in red and orange spots! I'm infested!

Doctor Lapis: Hmmm... Interesting. Don't panic!
Assistant, pull out your medical notebook, we have a skin rash to map out. Answer this 2nd question to validate your visit: Observe the distribution of these red/orange spots on the monument. Are they concentrated mainly on the smooth surface, or heavily on the rough (bush-hammered) surface? Do you notice if they prefer certain areas (in the sun, in the shade...) or if they can be found pretty much all over the perimeter?

Henri Desgrange: Is it contagious, Doctor? Tell me!

Doctor Lapis: It's... alive.

Henri Desgrange: Alive?! On my fine stone coat?! I'm going to faint.

Doctor Lapis: Get a grip, Desgrange! These are crustose lichens. A stubborn alliance between an alga and a fungus.

Henri Desgrange: Fungi? At 2,500 meters altitude?!

Doctor Lapis: Exactly. They withstand frost, snow, UV rays... And they love your "bush-hammered" finish! The tiny holes retain moisture—it's a real palace for them.

Henri Desgrange: But they're eating me alive!

Doctor Lapis: They do secrete microscopic acids to cling to you. We call that bioerosion.

Henri Desgrange: The end is near, I can feel it. I'll soon disappear... and then I'll be forgotten!

Doctor Lapis: We're going to check that right now. Calm down!
Assistant, let's look at our patient's vital prognosis. Answer this 3rd question to validate your visit: Looking at the current condition of the monument and the strength of the stone, does the damage caused by this "illness" seem fast and destructive (the stone is falling to pieces, the engravings are wearing away), or on the contrary extremely slow and superficial (the stone remains very solid, the engravings are mostly intact)?

Henri Desgrange: So, what's the verdict? Will I make it through the winter?

Doctor Lapis: You'll make it through the next few centuries without any problem, Mr. Desgrange. Your stone health is excellent.

Henri Desgrange: Phew... Thank you, Doctor, and thank you, assistant!

Doctor Lapis: At your service! Assistant, let me pack up our stethoscopes. And don't forget the photo for the medical file!
To validate this EarthCache, take a photo of yourself, your GPS, or a personal item representing you in front of the Henri Desgrange monument (without revealing close-up clues on the rock) and attach it to your "Found it" log.
