Introduction

Hier kommt deine Beobachtung ins Spiel.

  • Weiche Schichten → starke Ausräumung, Kluft wirkt breiter

Ramstein - Competence Contrast of a Fracture in Sandstone

Introduction

This EarthCache takes you to a prominent fracture in a layered sandstone outcrop. The fracture provides an excellent illustration of how tectonic stresses, rock competence, and selective weathering interact. Particularly striking is the fact that the fracture does not completely penetrate a single layer, making this an ideal location to explore the mechanics of rock fracturing.

Logging requirements

To log this EarthCache, please carefully examine the sculpture and then answer the following questions at the listing coordinates.

1. Characterise the layer that is not completely intersected by the fracture.

a) First, describe the visible characteristics in terms of colour, grain size and texture, hardness, and surface characteristics.

b) Which of these characteristics distinguish the layer from the adjacent layers?

c) Based on these observations, justify whether the layer can be considered more competent and/or more resistant to weathering.

2. Divide the fracture into three zones: above, within, and below the described layer.

a) Compare the width of the fracture in the three zones. What differences do you observe, and what do these differences indicate about the relative intensity of weathering in the respective zones?

b) Justify your interpretation based on the observed geometry of the fracture.

3. Analyse the course of the fracture in relation to the bedding.

Describe whether the fracture crosses the layers approximately in a straight line, follows their orientation, or is deflected at layer boundaries. Support your answer with at least one visible indication.

4. Identify the most clearly recognisable form of weathering in the area of the fracture.

a) First, describe a specific visible indication and then assign it to an appropriate type of weathering.

b) Justify your identification based on the observed feature.

5. WP2: Compare the crevasse visible here with the crevasse at the listing coordinates.

What two differences in structure or appearance do you notice?

Please take a photo of (yourself) or a personal item at the location, add the photo to your log. Make sure that the photos you use do not contain any clues, hints, or information that could help solve the tasks.

Log this cache as  "Found it"  and send me your proposed answers either via my profile ort hrough the geocaching.com Message Center. I will contact you if there is an issue with your answers.

Please note that logs without complete answers and, if applicable, a photo cannot be accepted as a valid find.

Have fun!

Geological Background

Sandstone consists of layers that may differ in their degree of cementation and consolidation. Depending on the type of cement (e.g. clay, carbonate, or iron oxides) and the nature of grain contacts, some layers are more competent (harder), while others are less competent (softer).

A fracture forms when tectonic stresses cause the rock to fail in a brittle manner. In general:

  • Fractures preferentially open in weak, less competent layers.
  • Hard, competent layers can narrow, deflect, or arrest a fracture.
  • Weathering can subsequently widen the fracture selectively, with softer layers being removed more rapidly.

This is exactly what can be observed at this outcrop: the fracture is well open above and below one particular layer, but encounters a mechanically stronger layer that it does not completely penetrate.

Why Does a Competence Contrast Develop?

Sedimentary rocks are deposited under changing environmental conditions. As a result, individual layers can differ in:

  • Grain composition
  • Cementation
  • Diagenesis
  • Porosity

These differences influence the mechanical properties of the rock. Some layers therefore behave as hard and brittle, whereas others are softer and more deformable.

How Does a Competence Contrast Affect Fractures?

This is where your observation becomes important.

A fracture may propagate more readily through less competent, weaker layers. When it encounters a competent layer, its propagation may:

  • slow down
  • become narrower
  • be deflected
  • be completely arrested

This is what can be observed at the outcrop: the fracture is well developed above and below the competent layer, but within the harder layer it appears only as a partial crack and does not cut completely through it.

Weathering Enhances the Competence Contrast

The present-day appearance of the fracture is controlled not only by its original tectonic formation but also by selective weathering:

  • Softer layers → stronger weathering and removal of material, making the fracture appear wider
  • Harder layers → slower erosion, making the fracture appear narrower or interrupted

Additional weathering processes include:

Hygroclastic weathering: Rock absorbs water, causing certain minerals or clay-rich components to swell, and contracts again as it dries. Repeated wetting and drying can weaken the rock and contribute to its disintegration.

Frost wedging: Water enters small cracks in the rock. When it freezes, it expands and widens the cracks. Repeated freeze–thaw cycles can eventually detach pieces of rock.

Biological weathering by roots and lichens: Plant roots can grow into small cracks and exert pressure on the surrounding rock. Lichens can also contribute to chemical weathering by producing acids that attack and break down minerals.
