🌍 EC – The Corps de Garde Promontory

đŸȘš Introduction

The Saint‑Germain‑sur‑Ay *Corps de Garde* (Guardhouse) is built on a rocky promontory overlooking the foreshore. This post was once used to monitor the coast and access to the Ay estuary.

Beyond its historical significance, this site features a remarkable rock outcrop exposed to the winds, sea spray, salt, and climatic variations of the Normandy coast.

The rock displays fissures, areas of weathering, varied colors, and extensive lichen colonization. This promontory is an excellent example of how massive rock evolves in a marine environment.

---

🧭 Geological Context

The promontory belongs to the bedrock of the Armorican Massif, composed of ancient rocks—often granitic or metamorphic.

On-site, one can observe:

massive rock with no visible stratification
natural fractures (ancient tectonic activity + freeze-thaw cycles)
marine weathering (sea spray, salt, wind, temperature fluctuations)
flaking/scaling zones typical of exposed rock
yellow, white, and orange lichens, indicating moisture levels and exposure
The historic building uses the rock directly as a natural foundation, illustrating the interaction between geology and architecture.

---

🧭 Access

The *Corps de Garde* is accessible via the coastal path.

Please respect the site, do not climb on the walls, and exercise caution in wet weather.

---

📾 Mandatory Photo

A photo of you or your GPS device in front of the promontory is required (showing your face is not mandatory).

---

FORMS OF WEATHERING Weathering leads to the breakdown of rocks; it depends notably on the nature of the rock or the climate. It can be physical (linked to temperature changes, impacts, desiccation, etc.) or chemical (manifesting, for example, through processes such as dissolution or hydrolysis). Living organisms can also play a role in weathering, and a single rock can, of course, be affected by different types of weathering.

Chemical weathering – Oxidation of a rock block.
Chemical weathering can manifest through various processes: hydrolysis, dissolution, hydration or dehydration, oxidation, etc. It is most effective in hot, humid climates.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Physical weathering
Physical weathering can be linked to various phenomena: temperature changes (such as frost wedging and thermal weathering), desiccation, salt crystallization within rock fractures (haloclasty), impacts, and decompression. Here, a network of small fractures is visible; their development is likely linked to frost wedging (alternating freeze-thaw cycles).

❓ Questions to answer to log this EarthCache

1ïžâƒŁ Rock/Building Interaction

The *Corps de Garde* is built directly onto the rock. Does the base of the building follow the natural shape of the rock, or does it appear to be cut or fitted?
Do you see a clean or irregular contact point between the building's stones and the rock?
In your opinion, what geological advantage was there to building directly on this promontory?
---

2ïžâƒŁ  weathering

Observe the cracks, fragments, and friable areas.

Find an area where the rock appears broken or flaked.
Describe the shape of this weathering: rounded, angular, platy, or splintered.
Which process seems most likely to you: freeze-thaw, thermal shock, marine erosion, or biological activity?
---
