📍 Introduction

🌍 EARTHCACHE – The Corps de Garde Chapel: Local Stone Exposed

📍 Introduction

The Corps de Garde (Guardhouse), situated on a promontory along the coast of the Manche region, is a small shelter built entirely from local stone without modern ornamentation. This makes it an ideal spot to observe the geology of the Cotentin peninsula as it is directly incorporated into the architecture.

Inside, the walls reveal the nature of the rocks used—their textures and fractures—as well as the effects of weathering caused by the marine climate.

This Earthcache invites you to examine these stones to understand how local geology influenced the construction and how the environment continues to alter these materials.

---

đŸȘš Geological Context

The Cotentin area is dominated by ancient sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, often originating from the Armorican Massif.

The stones used in traditional construction generally include:

schist (dark, foliated rocks that split easily into slabs)
sandstone (more massive, granular sedimentary rocks)
occasionally limestone or local rocks weathered by sea spray
In the Corps de Garde, the visible blocks display varied textures, natural fractures, and areas of weathering caused by moisture, freeze-thaw cycles, and proximity to the sea.

---

đŸ§± On-site Observation

Inside, you will see:

rough, minimally dressed stones
surfaces that are either granular or foliated, depending on the block
cracks, chips, and areas that are bleached or darkened
color variations resulting from mineral composition and moisture
These features allow you to identify the rock type and understand how it behaves in a coastal environment. ---

❓ Questions to answer to claim the EarthCache

1ïžâƒŁ Identify the rock

By observing the walls:

What is the dominant color of the stones?
Is the texture granular, foliated, compact, or crumbly?
Which rock family do you think this belongs to (sedimentary, metamorphic, or igneous)?
---

2ïžâƒŁ Describe a visible sign of weathering

Choose a stone showing signs of weathering (crack, chip, bleached surface, damp area).

Describe the shape of this weathering.
Which process seems most likely to you: freeze-thaw, moisture, sea spray, or biological activity?
Justify your choice based on what you see at the site.
---

3ïžâƒŁ Rock and construction

Observe how the stones are assembled.

Are the blocks dressed (cut/shaped) or rough?
Do you see natural strata, veins, or fractures in the stones?
Why was this local rock suitable for building a shelter on this promontory?
