Geocache Description:

FRANCAIS

ENGLISH

Haulchin is a French commune located in the Nord department.

Situated between Denain and Valenciennes, the commune spans 515 hectares, bordered by the Scheldt River, the A2 motorway, National Road 30 (now RD630), Departmental Road 40, and the railway line. Its scattered detached housing, rural character, towpath, and the Scheldt riverbank park provide a lush, green setting for the town's 2,281 residents. The housing stock consists entirely of detached homes, the majority of which are less than 50 years old.

As a historical aside, Haulchin was granted in 877 by Charles the Bald to the Abbey of Denain, which built a manor house there. Part of the village formed a separate lordship—the fief of Hamel—belonging to the Count of Hainaut. It was here that the population of Denain took refuge during the Battle of 1712, an event that marked the region's definitive incorporation into France.

The town features various natural areas, such as the banks of the Scheldt, where a pleasant towpath offers a lovely route for the walk required to find this cache. First, however, you must solve the riddle below. Once you have the code, the actual search will be a simple formality.
