Questions : Locate the spoiler photo in the gallery and respond :
1 - Based on your observations, identify the organic remnant indicated by the red arrow.
2 - By carefully examining the two rectangular carvings, identify at least one other organic remnant.
3 - Describe, in your own words, the four stages in the formation of shelly limestone.
4 - Take a photo of yourself, or an object representing you, at the WP, the choice of object is up to you, provided it does not contain any spoilers.

Lesson:
History and definition : Shell limestone is highly fossiliferous, composed of numerous fossilized organisms such as brachiopods, bryozoans, crinoids, sponges, corals, and mollusks (these are either casts or actual remains). It exhibits a wide variability in color, texture, and hardness. Shell limestone is a sedimentary rock, as it is composed of fragments. It is rich in broken shells, bound together by calcite. Calcium carbonate often represents about 10% of its volume, and shells of varying sizes are found within it, ranging from grains to very large pebbles.
The stages of formation:
Biological production: Marine organisms (mollusks, crustaceans, brachiopods) extract calcium and carbonates dissolved in seawater to build their calcium carbonate shells.
Accumulation: After the death of these organisms, their shells (whole or broken by waves and currents) accumulate in thick layers at the bottom of seas, lagoons, or along coastlines.
Sedimentation and compaction: Gradually covered by other sediments, the layers of debris are subjected to increasing pressure due to their burial.
Diagenesis: Under the effect of pressure and water circulating in the pores, which dissolves and redeposits a calcite cement, the fragments consolidate and transform into solid rock (shell limestone).
Uses : This shell limestone has been used in construction because it has the advantage of being both durable and relatively easy to work.
Happy geocaching, everyone! 😎
