Geocache Description:

Porte de la Poissonnerie - St Trop 🐟

🇨🇵

Questions : Locate the various elements requested within the fishmonger’s area and answer the following :

1 - Based on your observation of the frieze—excluding the red terracotta that outlines the seahorse—what is the color of the marble used for its interior ?

2 - Based on your observation of the frieze—excluding the red terracotta—what is the color of the marble that makes up the filaments of the jellyfish ?

3 - Determine the shade of the marble that makes up the fish display counters. ? If it is not visible, it is the same type as that "Piles" (kitchen-style sinks) located behind them.

4 - Describe, in your own words, the stages in the formation of Botticino Classico marble.

5 - Take a photo of yourself, or an object representing you, at the WP, the choice of object is up to you, provided it does not contain any spoilers.

EarthCache Rules: "Log this "Found it" cache and send me your suggested answers either via my profile or via email, and I will contact you if there is a problem."

Lesson:

Botticino Classico marble was formed from calcareous mud that accumulated at the bottom of a lagoon during the Mesozoic Era (between 190 and 60 million years ago). Historically, it has been quarried in the province of Brescia in Lombardy, Italy (particularly in the Botticino and Nuvolento areas).

The stages of its formation :

Sedimentation : Layers of calcareous sediments and mud were deposited in carbonate platforms and lagoons, trapping marine microorganisms and fossil debris.

Cementation and compaction : Over time, the accumulation of new layers exerted strong pressure, transforming these sediments into a compact micritic limestone (particularly found in the Corna geological formation in the Brescia hills of Italy).

Recrystallization and Metamorphism : Geological processes of pressure and compaction caused the rock to recrystallize, giving it its fine-grained texture, solidity, and characteristic beige-ivory hue.

Presence of Stylolites : The dark lines and veins (stylolites) that run through the stone result from the dissolution of mineral matter under pressure within the limestone.

Happy geocaching, everyone! 😎
