Winter Texans Part 2

The Story Behind the Term “Winter Texans”
Are you a "Snowbird" or are you a "Winter Texan?"
Last week you learned about the many northerners who 'flock' to the Rio Grande Valley to escape their cold winter weather and enjoy the sunshine and warmer temperatures found here in the RGV.
Initially referred to as "Snowbirds" because of the people who were already migrating and wintering in other warmer states such as Arizona, California and Florida and were referred to as Snowbirds, but that name had started to have a negative meaning as people who were not exactly welcomed by the year round residents.
The term Winter Texan was made popular in the 1970s by a man called "Smokey" Boyle who wanted these winter visitors to feel welcome and recognized for their contributions to the RGV economy.
Many "Snowbirds" have now migrated from their Arizona, California or Florida winter locations to the RGV for many reasons and are glad to be called "Winter Texans"! So, are you a "Snowbird" or are you a "Winter Texan" at heart?
See next week’s event for Part 3 the final installment of the “Winter Texans” story.
We meet in the small dining room to your left as you enter the restaurant.
