Before steam ships began to ply the coast people had to row or sail to get to the nearest town of Flekkefjord. The first steam vessel was Neptun (1866/67). Neptun did not actually last long - people had little money and preferred to row or sail all the way to town. Later on, however, the steam vessels Rap, Trafik, Lister and a series of vessels named Alf came into regular service. The first Alf remained in regular service from 1891 to 1948. Then came Alf II and Alf III, motor ships - of course. In the summer of 1972 the ferry service between Kvellandstrand ( on the mainland) and Lauvnes (on Hidra) opened. The first ferry was named Hidrasund. A new ferry came into service in 1988, named Hidrasund II. The latest and biggest ferry is Hidraferja, in service from 2001 and owned by the shipping company Flekkefjord Dampskipsselskap AS. It takes 38 vehicles.
Today the people of Hidra are trying to get a tunnel connection.Hidra landfast.
