“INDIANA SPIRIT
QUEST”
The Indiana Spirit Quest series of
geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries
built by Hoosier Pioneers. In just a year and a half, the quest has
grown to over four hundred caches hidden in over forty Indiana
counties, and Ohio and Michigan and the hiders have grown to over
twenty cacher teams, most of which are comprised of Dogs and
their Humans. Over 750 cacher teams have
logged over 8,900 finds. One cache machine found 102 ISQ caches in
a single day (daylight hours only).

INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST

"Lonely Old Cemetery"
Springfield Cemetery is
in Springfield Township, Franklin County near the Indiana/Ohio
line. The cemetery was established in 1835. You will make your way
through a pair of gated, brick pillars and travel a two track path
between two fields to a lonely cemetery perched up on the yonder
hill. When you reach the cemetery, we encourage you to park at the
front, the path does continue to the back, but it is easier to park
and turn around just inside the cemetery
boundary.
We found this spot while visiting
the Lonely Old Church Cache and decided together
they would make a great duo. We were charmed by this little old
cemetery. It is quite well kept, and is the final resting place for
Revolutionary soldier, John Shaffer of Pennsylvania and E. Keith
Brier who served in the Navy during WWII. Shaffer served in the 4th
Artillery Regiment of
Pennsylvania.
November 9, 2008: Due to the
bulldozing of fence rows and the sliver of woods that bordered the
southeast edge of this cemetery by the farmer, we are sorry to say
that much of this site's hidden charm has been lost - along with
the original hiding spot for this cache and a few grave
markers. We were extremely surprised that the boundaries of
this plot were encroached on in this way, considering burials are
still occurring here.
November 29, 2009: Stopped by here this
afternoon and it appears that the second hiding spot has
disappeared now too. But there is good news to report, it looks
like we weren't the only ones upset with the violation of the
cemetery boundaries and grave markers. There are now wooden survey
stakes marking the corners, grass has been allowed to grow back and
it looks like some of the buried stones that got broken in the
bulldozing have been reassembled and reset, although not in their
original locations. Glad to see this cemetery being cared for once
again. It is one of our favorites for the unique setting and the
gates set so far away from the actual
plot.
August 28, 2010: More progress at the
cemetery; a post and chain fence now rings the perimiter. We have
decided to move the cache location to hopefully keep it from
disappearing. We'll see how it
goes.

The cache is a large bison
type container with a log, bring your own pen. It is hidden away
from graves. Please return the cache exactly as you found
it.
As always, no ISQ searching after
dusk, and cache in, trash out.
